Story
As a teenager, Kristin Berry had heard all the horror stories surrounding foster care and adoption - abuse, neglect, rejection, anger, and misunderstandings. But instead of closing her heart, God opened it wide. This is Kristin's honest, unvarnished story of some of her experiences as a foster parent of 23 children over the course of nine years. What she learned is that living in a foster home is like living with a revolving door. You never know who will arrive or who you will have to say goodbye to. Leaving the door open means there will be heartache and pain, but also adventure and unexpected joy.

Just as you prepared your home to welcome a new child, it is important to prepare your heart and mind - especially if the child has suffered from a background of trauma. Perhaps your invitation for love is met with hostility and you find that this new member of your family rejects connection. It’s critical to acknowledge the effects of trauma on a child’s ability to attach. Mike and Kristin Berry realized this when they became adoptive and foster parents. They now offer guidance from their own journey to others parenting a child who has experienced past trauma.

Rather, explosive kids are lacking some crucial skills in the domains of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, and problem solving, and they require a different approach.

Parenting isn't rocket science, it's just brain surgery. And Dr. Joshua Straub has good news for you: You can do it! You don't need to do all the "right" things as a parent. Both science and the Bible show us that the most important thing we can provide for our kids is a place of emotional safety. In other words, the posture from which we parent matters infinitely more than the techniques of parenting. Emotional safety - more than any other factor - is scientifically linked to raising kids who live, love, and lead well.

Children today live in an unpredictable, disruptive, and often violent world. Many of them live in two different homes with different sets of expectations. They face bullying at school and online. They hear news of school shootings, and racially or religiously motivated violence. They may have lost a friend or a loved one. As parents, the impulse to protect our children is strong, but that very protection can end up handicapping them for life. Healing isn't possible, though, without first uncovering the hurts—starting with adoption's central players: adoptees, who are so often in pain, suffering from what the latest brain science validates as the long-term emotional effects of separation trauma. By encouraging others to vulnerably share their stories, the authors discover that adoptees aren't the only ones in the adoption constellation who are hurting. Birth parents regularly shut down after being shut out by adoptive parents.

every parent should listen to this!
This book is for foster families and focuses on kids with trauma, but I feel like every parent can use this wonderful information to be a better parent. I am a stepmom and realized by listening to this book that my step kids have their own trauma that needs the right attention. wouldn't it be great if we realized all of our kids have their own story and honoring that is one of the greatest things we can do for them.

This is a great resource for anyone starting the adoption and foster care journey. It also could possibly provide some insight for those on the journey who need a little more help or guidance. It gave very practical advice on handling curious people, questions the child may have, what to anticipate when meeting the birth family, and much much more.

WOW
As an adoptive mother, I really enjoyed listening to all of the different suggestions and insight. I felt like some parts of this book were actually written about my experiences with my kids. It opened up my eyes to some things that I need to change and helped me to see that some things I do are just fine even though sometimes I don’t feel like I’m doing my best. I feel like this is something that all foster and adoptive parents should listen to at some point during their journey.
