About this listen

Savvy criminal turned skilled Leviathan pilot Zara Cole finds new friends and clashes with bitter enemies in the second book of this action-packed series from New York Times best-selling authors Rachel Caine and Ann Aguirre that’s perfect for fans of The 100 and The Fifth Wave.

Zara Cole was a thief back on Earth, but she’s been recently upgraded to intergalactic fugitive. On the run after a bloody battle in a covert war that she never expected to be fighting, Zara, her co-pilot, Beatriz, and their Leviathan ship, Nadim, barely escaped the carnage with their lives.

Now, Zara and her crew of Honors need a safe haven, far from the creatures who want to annihilate them. But they’ll have to settle for the Sliver: a wild, dangerous warren of alien criminals. The secrets of the Sliver may have the power to turn the tide of the war they left behind - but in the wrong direction.

Soon, Zara will have to make a choice: run from the ultimate evil - or stand and fight.

Can one sing their way to victory?

In the aftermath of the encounters with the interstellar phage from book 1, Zara Cole and allies are forced to find refuge at a dangerous outpost for the outlaws and outcast. In attempt to earn the money for the much needed repairs, medical treatments, resources, armor, and weapons, an offer comes to recover the remnants of an evil and insatiable god-king. However, the phage are still on the hunt, and this new mission unlocks more menacing perils for all to face. Zara's team is empowered by their unity and by their songs/music.

Like the first book in the series, this one leans toward being young adult. Some plot elements are quite unique, and generally keep this series sufficiently intriguing.

Loved the last one, disappointed in this one

(spoilers) so disappointing, basically the only thing that happens in the middle third of the book is a stupid galactic fight club. I couldn’t care less and switched play back to 2x just to see if anything happened later in the book. Then the book ends with a ridiculous cliffhanger. Nothing is resolved, the book just stops. I do kind of want to know how the story ends, but I’m torn whether or not to buy the next book in the series.
