About this listen
An Appalachian Outcast Seeks a Place to Belong
Kizzie McAdams spent her childhood longing to see beyond her secluded Blue Ridge Mountain home, but when her job as a servant in a landowner’s house results in an unplanned pregnancy, the excitement of her new life dissolves into alienation and heartbreak. Her father disowns her, the father of her child gives inconsistent affection and broken promises, and the matriarch of the area is determined to distance Kizzie from her son by any means necessary.
Despite the kindness of a local family, Kizzie realizes she and her newborn son must start over somewhere else, so she flees to a nearby town. But her new world carries many of the same prejudices as the old. It also brings the unexpected friendship of businessman Noah Lewis, a man who lives with the same desire as Kizzie for helping the marginalized. Unfortunately, Kizzie and Noah’s attempts to help those in need pit them against Noah’s elder brother, a powerful mill owner who controls the family finances.
Is Kizzie and Noah’s growing romance strong enough to overcome family power, social expectations, and Kizzie’s past? And when Kizzie’s first love returns to claim her, which future will she choose?

Story
The year is 1901, and the hustle and bustle of the holidays is descending on New York's Fifth Avenue. For the first time in her privileged life, Adelaide Forsythe couldn’t be happier about the prospect of a quiet Christmas. That’s not to say her transition from Missto Mrs. has been without challenge. Though she doesn’t regret marrying for love instead of wealth, she feels woefully unprepared to run her own household. Then, on the first Sunday of Advent, winter winds bring surprising change, first through a young orphan boy and then a seasoned housekeeper who seems too good to be true.

Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

Story
Johnnie Rico never really intended to join up—and definitely not the infantry. But now that he’s in the thick of it, trying to get through combat training harder than anything he could have imagined, he knows everyone in his unit is one bad move away from buying the farm in the interstellar war the Terran Federation is waging against the Arachnids. Because everyone in the Mobile Infantry fights. And if the training doesn’t kill you, the Bugs are more than ready to finish the job.

Story
Hedda Krause, a young widow in search of a new rich husband, checked into the Menger Hotel in 1915 with a case full of jewels - and never checked out. In 2017, Dini Blackstone gives ghost walk tours in San Antonio. Her favorite is the tale of Hedda Krause who, in Dini's estimation, perpetrated the world's longest con, dying old and wealthy. Hedda adamantly claimed a ghost apparition lured her into a long, dark hallway, and when she returned to her room, her precious jewelry had been stolen. Can Dini see another side of the story that is worth God's grace?

My name is Luke Edgewood, and there are few things in life that I require. Mainly black coffee. And flannel. And lots of solitude. And my dogs, Chewy and Indie. What I don't need is romance, so I have no plans to change my thirty-year-old-bachelor status anytime soon. But my youngest sister thinks that by accepting a short-term construction job in the small European country of Skymar, I'm going to follow along in her footsteps and discover my own romantic adventure. Nope. Bah humbug. The End. This time, her rom-com-movie senses are totally wrong. Or maybe not.
