About this listen

A stunning middle-grade debut - full of heart, humor, and nonstop action.

It's tough to be 13, especially when somebody's trying to kill you. Not that Egg's life was ever easy, growing up on sweaty, pirate-infested Deadweather Island with no company except an incompetent tutor and a pair of unusually violent siblings who hate his guts.

But when Egg's father hustles their family off on a mysterious errand to fabulously wealthy Sunrise Island, then disappears with the siblings in a freak accident, Egg finds himself a long-term guest at the mansion of the glamorous Pembroke family and their beautiful, sharp-tongued daughter Millicent.

Finally, life seems perfect. Until someone tries to throw him off a cliff. Suddenly, Egg's running for his life in a bewildering world of cutthroat pirates, villainous businessmen, and strange Native legends. The only people who can help him sort out the mystery of why he's been marked for death are Millicent and a one-handed, possibly deranged cabin boy.

Come along for the ride. You'll be glad you did.

Great story!

A thrilling tale of adventure with pirates, mysterious treasure, love and friendships. Excellent narration. The story gets violent and is somewhat heavy, so caution for younger children is advised.

Exciting misadventures!

Pirates, lost treasure, murder, more pirates, crazy escapes, battles to the death, a cute girl, and, did I say pirates? A great story for young adult readers who appreciate clever heroics and finding friends among enemies along the way.

My boys (age 10 and 8) loved it!

My boys loved the story and stayed up way too late listening to it. Hated to see it end and were sad that Book 2 isn't available yet. Can't get much higher review than that!

Great Boy book for Middle Grade Readers

Where does Deadweather and Sunrise rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the best Middle Grade reads.

What did you like best about this story?

Larger than life characters. All of them.

What does Fred Berman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His narration serves Egg's dry wit.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reation, but very funny in places.

Any additional comments?

It's a little dark, but the characters are so exaggerated that the darkness adds to the caricature.
Fast moving book with lots of action and adventure.
