Story
Many horse trainers, even those who espouse the so-called natural horsemanship approach, take the position that horses who fail to obey a human's request are doing so as much out of perversity as ignorance. That's not Mark Rashid's view. In his words, "If we understand that horses can't separate the way they feel from the way they act, then we can start to see that unwanted behavior isn't bad behavior at all. More times than not, it's just the horse expressing the way he feels at that particular moment in time....

Story
Monty Roberts' father, a traditional horse trainer, had taught his son to dominate a horse in order to "break" it. But when he was 13, Monty made a discovery that changed his life. As he watched a mare tame a rebellious colt, Monty saw that she was speaking to it through eye and body movements. Astonished, Monty realized that he could train horses by using their language, speaking to them in ways that would form trust and understanding. Developing techniques based on what he learned from the horses around him, Monty embarked on a remarkable career - one that would bring him international fame as the real Horse Whisperer.

In 2008, 26-year-old Tik Maynard faced a crossroads not unlike that of other young adults. A university graduate and modern pentathlete, he suffered both a career-ending injury and a painful breakup, leaving him suddenly adrift. The son of prominent Canadian equestrians, Maynard decided to spend the next year as a "working student." In the horse industry, working students aspire to become professional riders or trainers, and willingly trade labor for hands-on education.

“As to methods there may be a million and then some, but principles are few. The man who grasps principles can successfully select his own methods. The man who tries methods, ignoring principles, is sure to have trouble.” - Harrington Emerson Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of training decisions to be made when working with a horse? Should you speed up, slow down, turn left, turn right? What transition should you make next? Which body part should you move where? I Read This Book On The Heels...
of Mark Rashid's Whole Heart, Whole Horse, a stunningly impressive and even poetic book about horsemanship--and how it enriches living. Often, one will read such an inspirational book and go immediately to another work by the same author and be disappointed, finding him to be a one-hit wonder. This was not the case here. If anything, Horsemanship Through Life is an even deeper and more enjoyable work. Rashid not only gets to the very heart of horsemanship and everything I have always believed and practiced in working with my own horse, Sassy, he is a very skilled and patient storyteller in the balance. I cannot wait to get to more of Mark's books and read even more of the horsemanship and philosophy of a kindred spirit.

Very moving book
Mark Rashid speaks a lot about his experiences with Aikido in this book. He has a lot of good points. If we aren't usually patient, kind and understanding throughout our regular days, why would we expect to be this way when we go out to work with out horses? Very good book. Made me laugh and shead some tears in the end.

Excellent book and good narration
The narrator did a great job so it was easy listening. Mark has a unique perspective on horses and has changed my thinking about the relationship with my horse and also my thinking about LIFE and how to always "do good work". I am thinking about looking into Aikido.

A Life Worth Sharing
What a great book for anyone who loves to learn and grow. I always say that I learned what unconditional love is from my lifetime of being present with the dogs I’ve had the privilege of knowing. I’ve learned a lot from friends with horses about the majesty of those 4 legged beings. This book takes all that to another level. This author delivers in a straightforward manner many truths to live by. You will be happy you read it. I wholeheartedly recommend it!
