About this listen

From the BSFA Award-Winning Author of City Of Last Chances

City-by-city, kingdom-by-kingdom, the Palleseen have sworn to bring Perfection and Correctness to an imperfect world. As their legions scour the world of superstition with the bright flame of reason, so they deliver a mountain of ragged, holed and scorched flesh to the field hospital tents just behind the frontline.

Which is where Yasnic, one-time priest, healer and rebel, finds himself. Reprieved from the gallows and sent to war clutching a box of orphan Gods, he has been sequestered to a particularity unorthodox medical unit.

Led by 'the Butcher', an ogre of a man who's a dab hand with a bone-saw and an alchemical tincture, the unit's motley crew of conscripts, healers and orderlies are no strangers to the horrors of war. Theirs is an unspeakable trade: elbow-deep in gore they have a first-hand view of the suffering caused by flesh-rending monsters, arcane magical weaponry and embittered enemy soldiers.

Entrusted—for now—with saving lives deemed otherwise un-saveable, the field hospital's crew face a precarious existence. Their work with unapproved magic, necromancy, demonology and Yansic's thoroughly illicit Gods could lead to the unit being disbanded, arrested or worse.

Beset by enemies within and without, the last thing anyone needs is a miracle.

Great plot wonderfully narrated

Super witty and funny writing, albeit somewhat predictable at times (not always though). David Thorpe is imho one of the best narrators, giving many of the characters their own distinct and recognizable personalities.

Great climax

everything came together in such a satisfying way, the world building is so dense and intriguing. Similar humor and writing style to Terry Pratchett, would read again. Also loved the Narrator, great voices and switching accents

Best book of the series so far, and this is my favorite series.

Absolutely fantastic expansion of the series' characters and universe. It's just utterly delightful and intriguing.

Fun small-world character study!

I enjoyed this book more than City of Ruin.
Whereas that book seemed more focused on political events and their primary actors, this book focuses more on the lives of colorful individual characters who have formed a found family of misfits as they try to survive, surrounded & compelled by a maelstrom of forces out of their control.

The narration is excellent.

Great story and great delivery!

The author develops interesting and nuanced characters who are revealed, layer by layer, throughout the book, with many entertaining plot twists that come together in an ultimately fairly complete resolution. And the narrator did a wonderful job of bringing the story and the characters to life, in all their many complexities.

Could almost be a standalone, but works well any way you slice it

This was wonderful! Tchaikovsky’s originality never ceases to make me smile.

On the performance side, David Thorpe is a master - (Tchaikovsky’s audiobooks use the best voice actors, and so often they're voices I’ve never heard before which in itself is simply miles of awesome:) easily transitioning between dozens of characters and english dialects, often hilarious (only where intended) - just really great voice work: Thorpe clearly loves his craft, which shows, and makes it all the more fun to listen to!

In terms of Tchaikovsky's work on the whole - from one book to another - he jumps back and forth between sci-fi and fantasy with great ease. I’m rarely a fan of fantasy to the same degree as science fiction (and make no mistake, his sci-fi is really up there with the best of Vernor Vinge and Iain M. Banks), yet the tools of character and realm conception that Tchaikovsky is able to finagle demonstrate to me that fantasy has enormous potential for original concept development, moving far outside of the beyond-tired conventions of high fantasy, into the ever more fun and surprising turf of modern fantasy.

Evocative of some of the stage-sets of Gene Wolf’s “Science Fantasy” epics, but with none of the utter monotony of pace/overall arc, nor the two-dimensional adolescent chauvinism of character design; maybe a bit more like a super cool and strange 2nd cousin to China Miéville’s Bas-Lag books.

Great. Just Great. The third book can't come soon enough.

Fun Story with Excellent Narration

I enjoyed the first book but this one was a knockout. The first book was very heavy on the word building and it pays off in book 2 which focuses on the characters. If you enjoy stories revolving around found family, fantasy, and humor then you'd like this book.
