About this listen

With How to Make Your Money Last, you will learn how to turn your retirement savings into a steady paycheck that will last for life.

Today people worry that they're going to run out of money in their older age. That won't happen if you use a few tricks for squeezing higher payments from your assets - from your Social Security account (find the hidden values there), pension (monthly income or lump sum?), home equity (sell and invest the proceeds or take a reverse mortgage?), savings (should you buy a lifetime annuity?), and retirement accounts (how to invest and - critically - how much to withdraw from your savings each year). The right moves will not only raise the amount you have to spend; they'll stretch out your money over many more years.

You will also learn to look at your savings and investments in a new way. If you stick with super-safe choices, the money might not last. You need safe money to help pay the bills in your early retirement years. But to ensure that you'll still have spending money 10 and 20 years from now, you have to invest for growth today. Quinn shows you how. At a time when people are living longer yet retiring with smaller pots of savings than they'd hoped for, this book will become the essential guide.

Almost too detailed

If you could sum up How to Make Your Money Last in three words, what would they be?

needed information dispensed

What other book might you compare How to Make Your Money Last to and why?

None other

What does Amanda Carlin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She does a competent job.

Any additional comments?

This book would have been better structured by using more "real life examples" during each section, and less almost numbing detail. I know Social Security, Medicare and annuities are complex, but I am really interested, and it was almost too much for me. Jane, this is like a visit to the doctor. Sometimes we need to know exactly what to do, not so much why we do it.

Great Book for Retirement Planning

This is a great book. I listened to several books on this subject but this author provides great advice for both those who are considering using a financial planner and for those who are going to self plan. Author knows where to draw the line of when to give in depth advice and when to refer to others. Lots of references are given for websites to go to and types of planners to look for. Great depth on Social Security and annuities. Recommend highly!

Crucial Guide for Those Nearing Retirement

This is a wonderful book for those getting close to retirement and needing to get serious about how they actually want to carry out their plan. This guide covers about all the major topics that retirees need to face and plan for. It is FULL of information to consider.

There are two areas where this book really shined, in my opinion. First as it gives reasonably in-depth overviews of each topic, it provides resources on where you can get more information so you can drill into learning more about your own personal situation to make the best retirement decisions possible.

Second, the author editorializes here and there on the topics, providing more insight. She challenges the general views we often find ourselves embracing so we may reconsider our thinking and ultimately make better decisions about funding retirement. For example, I know many people want to take Social Security at 62 because they paid into it their whole life and want to get money back ASAP. Are there other criteria besides just getting you money back that you should be considering?

All in all, a top book for those getting approaching retirement and the top guide I would recommend.

Very Informative Audio Book

This audiobook was packed with lots of informative, relevant information. If you are retired or approaching retirement, listening to this is well worth your time. If I had any constructive criticism, it's that some of the chapters were too in-depth. Personally, I would have put the last chapter towards the beginning, as it provided good "bottom line" information and advice.

Just what I was looking for!

Pulled no punches. Where the author sees danger for the reader, she clearly points it out. I will re-read this book a few times before pulling the trigger... although the fast paced changes in Washington have made certain suggestions about healthcare insurance choices somewhat obsolete by now. As is stated many times in the book, your financial stability in retirement is up to you. This should not be your ONLY guide...merely another tool to refer back to. I will also purchase this book in print since there are SO many tips that would be difficult to get back to in the audio version. Yellow stickies in the prints version will certainly be numerous.
