Asha Ashanti Bromfield
About this listen
"Author and narrator Asha Bromfield offers an engrossing performance of this coming-of-age audiobook. Bromfield's experience as an actress and her ease with Jamaican Patois will draw listeners into a story that has multiple levels of emotional intensity." (AudioFile Magazine)
This program is read by the author, and includes a bonus conversation between the author and Tiffany D. Jackson.
In this sweeping debut, Asha Bromfield takes listeners to the heart of Jamaica, and into the soul of a girl coming to terms with her family, and herself, set against the backdrop of a hurricane.
Tilla has spent her entire life trying to make her father love her. But every six months, he leaves their family and returns to his true home: the island of Jamaica.
When Tilla’s mother tells her she’ll be spending the summer on the island, Tilla dreads the idea of seeing him again, but longs to discover what life in Jamaica has always held for him.
In an unexpected turn of events, Tilla is forced to face the storm that unravels in her own life as she learns about the dark secrets that lie beyond the veil of paradise - all in the midst of an impending hurricane.
Hurricane Summer is a powerful coming of age story that deals with colorism, classism, young love, the father-daughter dynamic - and what it means to discover your own voice in the center of complete destruction.
A Macmillan Audio production from Wednesday Books
"This is an excellent examination of the ways wealth, gender, and color can shape and at times create mental and emotional fractures. Verdict: A great title for public and high school libraries looking for books that offer a nuanced look at patriarchy, wealth, and gender dynamics." (School Library Journal starred review)
"Bromfield may have made a name for herself for her role on Riverdale, but with this debut, about a volatile father-daughter relationship and discovering the ugly truths hidden beneath even the most beautiful facades, she is establishing herself as a promising writer...this is a must." (Booklist starred review)

Ainsley came into my life in a flurry of vibrant colors, lighting my world up when all seemed lost. It wasn't our quiet nights by the creek or stolen kisses surrounded by a sea of cotton that saved me. It was her. She was my comfort when life threw one ugly tragedy after another at me. Until she dealt me the greatest blow. Now, abandonment, betrayal, and death darken every corner of my life. Anger and hurt burn bright where love and trust once lived. But now she's back.

Story
Growing up in an affluent suburb of New York City, 16-year-old Nevaeh Levitz never thought much about her biracial roots. When her Black mom and Jewish dad split up, she relocates to her mom's family home in Harlem and is forced to confront her identity for the first time. Nevaeh wants to get to know her extended family, but because she inadvertently passes as white, her cousin thinks she's too privileged, pampered, and selfish to relate to the injustices African Americans face on a daily basis.

Excellent narration, strong story
I absolutely love it when authors narrate their own books. I think it brings an extra layer of depth to the story, especially when there are accents like the Jamaican patois in this novel. Asha Bromfield has a gorgeous voice and was the only choice for Tilla.
I gave the story four stars only because it was definitely a difficult story to listen to given Tilla's fragile relationship with her father and the environment she was thrust into in Jamaica. There was always an impending sense of danger, made more realistic because you got the sense that maybe these were situations that the author herself had been in before. Tilla's strength and development through the novel helped, especially when she would self-soothe (in Asha's beautiful, calming voice).

When You're The Hurricane of the Season
Wow, just wow. This is truly a must read. Asha tackles colorism with the Black Race, abandonment, rape, incest, jealously, secrets and finding Home. Tilla the protagonist, is a fearless Jamaican born girl who now lives in Canada. Her and her sister Mia went to the yard, (countryside of Jamaica) for the summer to spend time with their father. Upon arriving they aren't greeting with the love they should. Tilla sees wayyy too much while on the island, I cried and smiled throughout this book. My heart smiled when she confronted her evil aunts, cousin, uncle, and most of all her "father". I cringed every time they referred to her father as Mass Tyson short for Master Tyson. Asha gave us an upfront view of the culture and daily country life of Jamaicans. I was sad it ended.... when can we get more Asha Bromfield. #Book31of2021 #bookworm #whatsnext

Loved It! A very good read!
Recently I wanted to get back into reading and Hurricane Summer is the first book I have completed that wasn’t a required reading for school or anything. This book took me on an emotional roller coaster. The feelings of the main character were so strong and although I’m not Jamaican, I could relate to some of the main topics. I also liked hearing about the Jamaican culture and hearing their language. I followed along while listening to the audiobook and that was the best decision! Asha Bromfield did an amazing job at making the characters come alive. She has a new book that will be released this year and I’ll definitely be purchasing it!

Amazing!
Had me on my toes the entire time! Addressed issues a lot of young girls face in today’s time. Great book. I look forward for more work from the author!

4.5 stars
4.5 stars. This was a good book. I wish Tilla tells everybody’s secret. That child been through so much. The labels they put on her, the child maltreatment, the assault, the physical and mental neglect of her father, and her silence. Tilla lost a lot that summer in Jamaica, but I’m glad she found herself. I was saddened that she lost her best friend. I hope there’s a part 2 to this book. Glad to hear the author narrate her own book. Love the insight and interview with Tiffany D. Jackson at the end. Great job for your first book.

Amazing
Loved listening to this story. The author's voice really brought the characters to life. I was screaming and crying and laughing all the emotions came out. Can't wait to read more from Ms. Bromfield, she is a true storyteller and has a powerful way with words.
