Publisher's summary

In this audiobook are Joshua Medcalf's unbelievable but true stories of going from skipping scholarships to law school in order to move into a homeless shelter and serve for six months, to living in the closet of a gym for nine months, and eventually going on to build a multimillion-dollar brand with global influence. Joshua is one of the most sought-after people in the world of mental conditioning, leadership, and life skills. He created the first mental-training apps in the world for basketball, soccer, and golf. He has written six books, including the viral sensations Chop Wood Carry Water and Pound the Stone. He is also one of two people ever to be invited to work with UNC women's soccer (22 national championships) on mental conditioning. Joshua is a straight shooter who is passionate about people, and he communicates with a heart posture of love and grace. But he is not afraid to say the hard things that people need to hear, which has made him a valuable consultant and mentor to some of the best in the world.

Some of the things you will learn in this book:

  • How to dominate your industry even without the traditional "credentials"
  • Why you should stop networking and start building authentic relationships
  • Greatness allows looks easy to those not around when all the training happens
  • Why you should stop thinking outside the box
  • The myths that stop most people from living their dreams
  • The old rules no longer apply (and how to play by the rules of the new economy we are living in)
  • How to leverage an entrepreneurial mindset even when working a corporate job
  • How your biggest weaknesses can become your secret weapon

Critic reviews

"Listen to this book and be inspired heart to heart from someone who has figured out how to change the world without pretending. Joshua is a bright light in the world; not just because of his brilliance, but because of his transparency." (Rory Vaden, New York Times best-selling author of Take the Stairs)

The hustle IS necessary

Enjoyable listen. Definitely great tool to strengthening one’s mind. He offers down to earth, practical examples. I asked myself more probing questions around what I say I believe and what I do. The book was not a how to do it as much as it caused me to self reflect on what I could do. The hustle !S necessary.

Decent content overall

The content and overall message of the book are good, but there is a definite left-leaning bias. I looked into the T2BC reading challenge and it contains several books written by the author of this book, as well as woke BLM propaganda like “White Privilege.” I’ll pass on the reading challenge, but some of the other books on the list look interesting.

Outstanding

All of Joshua Medcalf’s books I have gotten have been outstanding and never disappointing. His books get me to want to go into his mentoring programs. Definitely a must have book.
He confirmed my thought of how these “trainers” just use someone else’s training then make it there own over time…

Absolutely a MUST!

This book was so inspiring.
Get ready for your motivation and your passion for what you do get reignited.
He will have you digging deep within yourself and discovering a side of you that is ready to come out of that box full of self-doubt and lies.

10/10 recommend.

Absolutely WORTH it!

Within the first few minutes, I thought this was going to be a book that recaps some of the author's previous titles (which are amazing!). I'm glad I stuck with it because I think it is one of Joshua Medcalf's best books! While his other books use the fable style of storytelling, this one felt more personal...because it was. It is his story, and it is powerful! The author challenges the traditional hustle culture, urging listeners to find deeper purpose beyond mere achievement. I appreciated the honesty and at times moved by his own journey and the pitfalls of chasing external validation. If you're feeling burnt out or questioning your path, "Hustle" offers valuable insights and motivation. Absolutely worth it!

Misogynistic male who believe God controls your destiny

Tells women that the reason they put their kids in daycare is because they fear they will not be a good mother. So what he is saying is that women who have children should only aspire to be good mothers!!! What a pig. There are lots of women who have to work bc of needing two incomes to keep a family afloat and that is why we need to use daycare. He has no concept of a woman who aspires to be a CEO or doctor, etc and have children, either.
He says he will respond to every message you sent and this is a lie. I questioned him about his misogynistic view and never got a response back. I guess he doesn’t like to be challenged.
Also, is very strong believer in praying to God and God will help you with the right path to follow. So if you are not a prayer or not religious, this can be bothersome. I am a believer that only you are responsible for your own destiny with your hard work.
Be prepared that there are over 80+ chapters in this rather short book. Every thought starts a new chapter and many of the themes are repetitive throughout.
