About this listen
The outrageously funny, heartbreaking, and surprising story of Tracy Morgan's rise from ghetto wiseass to superstar comedian.
Who is Tracy Morgan? The wildly unpredictable funnyman who rocketed to fame on Saturday Night Live? The Emmy-nominated actor behind the sly and ingenious character Tracy Jordan on the award-winning hit sitcom 30 Rock, whose turbulent personal life often mirrors that of his fictional alter ego? Is he Chico Divine, the life of the party - any party, anytime, anywhere - getting ladies pregnant everywhere he goes? Or is he a soulful, tender family man who emerged from a hardscrabble ghetto upbringing and, against all odds, achieved superstardom, raised a solid family, prevailed over a collection of lethal bad habits, and is still ascending new heights and coming into his own?
The answer is: Tracy Morgan is all that. And a bag of potato chips with a 50-cent soda.
When he was just a boy living in the Tompkins Projects in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, being funny was about survival. With the right snap, Tracy could shut down the playground bullies who picked on him and his physically disabled older brother. And with a wild enough prank, he could exact revenge on whoever stole his Pumas at the community pool. Later, being funny was about escape - from the untouchable sadness of his father's death, from the desperation of the drug dealer's trade, from the life-and-death battles waged on the streets of the South Bronx in the age of crack. But these days, being funny is about living his dream - a dream born in the comedy clubs of Harlem and realized on shows like Martin and Saturday Night Live, where he was a cast member for seven years, and in movies like The Longest Yard and Half-Baked.
With brutal honesty and his trademark take-no-prisoners humor, Tracy tells the story of his rise to fame, with all its highs and its many lows - from the very public battles with alcohol and diabetes that threatened both his career and his life to the private and poignant end of his 20-year marriage. In his singularly warped and brilliant way, he muses on family, love, sex, race, politics, ambition, and what it takes to bring the funny.
Hilarious, inspiring, searing, and touching, I Am the New Black is a fascinating peek inside the minds of one of the most compelling and defining comedians of our time.

Mike Epps is one of America’s favorite and funniest people, but the path to fame was paved with opportunities to mess it up. And mess it up he did. Growing up in “Naptown” - what people who live there really call rough-around-the-edges Indianapolis - Epps was drawn to a life of crime, but as he quickly discovered, stealing and dealing didn’t really fit his sweet sensibilities. Not to mention he wasn’t very good at it - take, for example, the day he had to call the cops on himself when a dog wouldn’t let him leave a house he was burgling.

His real name was Earl Simmons. As a child, he placed higher on tests than his fellow students and liked to spend mornings with his mother and sisters playing games and making pancakes. But for young Earl - a boy growing up on the streets of Yonkers, New York - that kind of childhood didn’t last long. Beatings, abuse, and neglect very soon had him moving on to other things, like robbing, stealing, drugs, and, eventually, jail. Along the way, however, he found a talent and a passion for rhyme.

Fat Joe is a hip-hop legend, but this is not a tale of celebrity; it is the story of Joseph Cartagena, a kid who came of age in the South Bronx during its darkest years of drugs, violence, and abandonment, and how he navigated that traumatizing landscape until he found—through art, friendship, luck, and will—a rocky path to a different life. This memoir, written in Joe’s own intensely compelling voice, moves with the momentum of pulp fiction, but underneath the tragicomedy and riveting tales of the streets and the industry is a thought-provoking story about a generation of survivors.

After three years of sobriety, Chris Farley's life was at its creative peak until a string of professional disappointments chased him back to drugs and alcohol. He fought hard against them, but it was a fight he would lose in December 1997. Farley's fans immediately drew parallels between his death and that of his idol, John Belushi. Without looking deeper, however, many failed to see that Farley was much more than just another Hollywood drug overdose. At basketball-crazy Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts, junior guard Chris Herren carried his family’s and the city’s dreams on his skinny frame. His grandfather, father, and older brother had created their own sports legends in a declining city; he was the last, best hope for a career beyond the shuttered mills and factories. Herren was heavily recruited by major universities, chosen as a McDonald’s All-American, featured in a Sports Illustrated cover story, and at just seventeen years old became the central figure in Fall River Dreams, an acclaimed book about the 1994 Durfee team’s quest for the state championship.

In a strange world where Rose McGowan was continually on display, stardom soon became a personal nightmare of constant exposure and sexualization. Rose escaped into the world of her mind, something she had done as a child, and into high-profile relationships. Every detail of her personal life became public, and the realities of an inherently sexist industry emerged with every script, role, public appearance, and magazine cover. The Hollywood machine packaged her as a sexualized bombshell, hijacking her image and identity and marketing them.

Great audiobook for fans!
Tracy Morgan speaks from the heart in this autobiography. Great performance.
I'm a big fan so to listen to him speak candidly about his life was cool. Growing up in Brooklyn, his family, obstacles in his life, stand-up, SNL and his tv/movie career were all interesting to me. The origins of where his came up with his characters was great.
I was hoping for more crazy funny stories but since this was an adaptation of his book maybe they were omitted for time/content.
Worth the listen!!!

It's really Tracy...
Listening to this book is not for everybody. It's like you have a slightly "off", kinda goofy dude following you around and just talking in your ear about his life and...WHATEVER. He does go off topic all the time, he launches into song, he mis-pronounces words ("Those plans never came into 'fluition'), he starts talking about the day he found out his dad was diagnosed with AIDS and all of a sudden starts talking about what a "tender-roni" his girlfriend is! It's unlike any audio book I've listened to before, and it definitely may irritate people. But to me, the idea of T.M yapping in my ear is entertaining, no matter what he's yapping about.

Not easy, but real
This is not an easy listen - - it's hard because of where he comes from and who he is. We're meeting a man at a time of change who is obviously still thinking through his hard life. Not everyone's cup of tea and NOT a comedy book. I would recommend for people who have had really easy lives and challenge you to walk a mile in these shoes. I think only then, can you appreciate this hard life and the humor that springs from pain.

Mind blowingly honest!
I loved it and hated it all at the same time. If you have gone through any of this you’re going to love it and hate because it’s making you laugh at an enormous amount of pain. If you love it with out going through similar struggles, you are an amazing person for dealing with the real talk and foul language. Its about urban life transitioned to wealth and access story. It’s an unorganized, but beautifully crafted testimony with peaks and valleys all wrapped up in a cautionary tale of faith and forgiveness. Well done Tray Mo! And that’s coming from a Bronx-born veteran from the same time and era. #1520sedgewickave
