About this listen

A stunning, hilarious memoir displaying Koy’s “wide-ranging comedic talent and abundant wells of perseverance” (Kirkus Reviews, starred). Mixed Plate illuminates the burning drive and unique humor that make Jo Koy one of today’s most successful comedians.

Well guys, here it is - my story. A funny, sad, at times pathetic but also kick-ass tale of how a half-Filipino, half-white kid whose mom thought (and still thinks) his career goal was to become a clown became a success. Not an overnight success, because that would have made for a really short listen, but an All-American success who could give my immigrant mom the kind of life she hoped for when she came to this country, and my son the kind of life I wished I’d had as a kid. With all the details of what it felt like to get the doors closed in my face, to grind it out on the road with my arsenal of dick jokes, and how my career finally took off once I embraced the craziness of my family, which I always thought was uniquely Filipino but turns out, is as universal as it gets.

In this book, I’ll take you behind the mic, behind the curtain - okay, way behind it. From growing up with a mom who made me dance like Michael Jackson at the Knights of Columbus, to some real dark stuff, the stuff we don’t talk about often enough as immigrants. Mental health, poverty, drinking. And show you the path to my American Dream. Which was paved with a lot of failure, department store raffle tickets to win free color televisions, bad jokes, old VHS tapes, a motorcycle my mom probably still hates, the only college final I aced (wasn’t math), and getting my first laugh on stage.

In this book, I get serious about my funny. And I want to make you laugh a little while I do it. I’m like Hawaii’s favorite lunch - the mixed plate. Little bit of this, a little bit of that. My book Mixed Plate is, too.

Even a bigger fan

Being a second generation, Filipino immigrant, with half blood children of my own...and of course a nurse...how can I not easily relate to this book? This book had me giggling, empathizing with the struggles and heartbreak of mental illness and encouraging my white husband that he needs to listen to it (I don’t think reading it be would be the same...). You can feel Jo’s deep gratitude for where he is today. Thanks Jo for sharing your story and opening minds!

Fantastic autobiography!!

I listen to a lot of audiobooks but none quite as engaging as the story of Jo Koy’s life! The content was interesting and well organized and the performance was exceptional. Sometimes I get bored listening to the family history of certain celeb bios, but Jo’s life was interesting, relatable, and well told. I highly recommend this book! Loved it!!!

See you, Hear you, Peel you!!!

Migrated to US when I was 13 from Phil.
First English sentence was “that is beautiful” as we passed by a burnt down house off 101 when I was picked up from SFO heading. I practiced saying it too during the 13+hrs flight.
Bag of chips of cup of noodles were gourmet lunches.
Spent 16th birthday filling up McDonald’s job application.
Took 8yrs to get BSEE from SJSU while working in retail stores. Yeah, far less excited from your story but I see you!, hear you!, feel you!
Thank you for sharing your family story for the next generation and the rest of us can continue to learn and grow from.

Enjoyed every minute of it.

A Story for ALL Creatives! Bonus if you’re Pinoy!

I suddenly feel Filipino strength like never before. Jo tells his story, so many pieces as a Filipina entertainer myself that are relatable (MOM! FOOD!) I truly value the openness about painful truths, and I value the representation. We need so much more!

Binge-worthy!

A must listen! I finished this book in one day. This made me have a deeper appreciation for Jo Koy’s journey as a Filipino comedian. I love how be opens up about his upbringing, family, struggles, growth, and perseverance. I enjoyed hearing about his experiences in all the places he’s lived from the Philippines to L.A. and everywhere in between. He’s real, hilarious, and vulnerable. If you love Jo Koy, you’ll love him even more (and his mom too!). The downloadable Filipino recipes, YES JO KOY, what a cool bonus!
