Publisher's summary

The darkest secrets can be found in the coldest hearts....

When the fog clears one December morning in Lincolnshire, the body of a young woman is discovered lying facedown in a field. Murdered in cold blood, the case falls to DI Freya Bloom and her team to unearth the sequence of events and bring the deadly truth to light. A carer by day, the victim, Emma Blanch, tended to the needs of the elderly. A big heart and a gentle touch were all she needed to get by. But when Bloom learns that Emma was recently the suspect in another murder enquiry, she discovers that someone has taken the law into their own hands—and they are still tidying up loose ends.

In the tiny settlement of Wasps Nest, Bloom must dig up the past to discover who Emma Blanch really was. But one fact is clear—the truth died with Emma, and the killer will stop at nothing to have his way.

Who had more to gain from her death? Who had more to lose? And how far will the killer go until his deadly secrets are buried forever?

Set in the wild Lincolnshire fens, this British detective novel is a murder mystery with a touch of humor, a hint of romance, and a series of twists that will keep you guessing until you hear the final minute.

In Cold Blood is the astonishing third book in the brand new British crime series from USA Today best-selling author Jack Cartwright. Perfect for fans of JD Kirk, JM Dalgliesh, Rachel McClean, and Ann Cleeves.

Keystone Cops

I like to give a series at least 2 or 3 books to get itself together before I make a judgment to be fair. These are ok books but I definitely will not be spending a full credit on another one in the series. If they go on a deep sale or turn up in the plus catalog I will listen to a couple more to see if they get any better. A few reviewers of the first book in the series said the MC was highly unlikeable and they were absolutely correct. I started to warm up to her in the second book but in this one it is just plain clear that she is callous, cares about no one but herself, and is beyond rude to everyone. Also, the sexual tension between her and her DS is forced and ridiculous. Finally, the whole team runs around in circles with no real investigations going on and at the end of every book the MC has a light bulb moment like, "Yes, that's it, why didn't we look at this extremely obvious suspect earlier"! It's pretty ridiculous.

The narrator does a fine job and although he wouldn't make my top 5 I'd listen to other books he performed.
