Story
Arriving in the famous English seaside resort, Albert plans only to reminisce about a childhood holiday more than 70 years in the past. While there, he will eat the town’s most famous creation—the sugary treat known as rock. But when he walks into a shop being shaken down by heavies enforcing a protection racket, all thoughts of relaxation go out the window. Instantly marked when Rex rousts the criminals, Albert must choose whether to leave the town—the sensible choice—or unravel the gang’s plans—the option containing the greatest likelihood for mayhem and danger.

My life was going just fine by most standards. I ran a successful business in a tight-knit magical community, and lived just blocks from a beautiful lake and series of hiking trails. Then Selene showed up. According to some magical code I inherit my aunt's ancient familiar; a grumpy ten-pound cat with a broken filter. She fancies herself something of a saber-toothed tiger, and claims to have wrestled the thread of her ninth life from the hands of the Fates themselves—although, I'm pretty sure that last part isn't true. Almost positive.

When a magical plague is released in a Depression-era New York soup kitchen, private detective Alex Lockerby finds himself in a desperate hunt to catch a madman before he can strike again. His investigations lead Alex to a famous thief, a daring heist, and the search for a mythic book of ancient magic, but none of that brings him any closer to finding the man responsible for the massacre. With the police and New York’s Council of Sorcerers desperate to find the culprit, Alex becomes a suspect himself, thanks to his ties to the priest who ran the soup kitchen.

Jolene Hartgrave, here! I went from being a top dog lawyer to a hangdog pet psychic in the ruff part of town, all thanks to a pesky curse that gave me the gift of gabbing with animals. But my luck is finally looking up. I’ve teamed up with a hottie police officer and his snarky, lie-sniffing German shepherd to catch criminals. From a murdered fashion icon spinning a web of lies to the killed curator of an occult museum, I’m doggedly helping the police bring the bad guys to justice.

Publisher's summary
Paranormal investigation takes balls. Amanda will just have to wing it then.
What was she thinking? Quitting her steady job for the police for an uncertain future at a paranormal investigation agency? No time to dwell on it though, as she has a new client with a surprising problem: Kimberly Kousins has been cursed by a voodoo priest.
Determined to prove to herself, her former chief inspector (whom she loathes), and everyone else that she is a capable woman with no need for a man to rescue her, she is going to have to bend the day to her will.
But voodoo nonsense isn’t the only thing distracting her. After several dates with hot, athletic, super-rich Brett Barker, they still haven’t made it into bed. Is that normal? Is he waiting for her to make the first move? Her new boss has inexplicably taken the week off without warning, leaving her to run the business, and his best friend, the handsome, muscular six-foot-seven-inch Benjamin Winters, AKA Big Ben, is being very clear about what he wants to do with her.
You can be certain that nothing will go as planned in this mayhem-filled, madcap cozy mystery.

But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Loved this one
This one was great!
*Does need a trigger warning*.
Great story, great outcome, good movement forward for several characters.
Narrator was much better than the one who did books 1-4, rhythm and emphasis very good, however she did have an odd thing where she occasionally did the thick-tongue baby voice. Not sure why she did that, and only on and off.

More please
This was great can you please write 10 more with the very same narrator? I so enjoyed Jess Meadows’ Patience, actually ALL her characters were spot on. It was great to have from Amanda Harper’s perspective. More Please!

Excellent Adventure
Amanda Harper is a super character. Her sidekick Patience is reminiscent of a Janet Evanovich character & is great comic relief. Higgs writes well & the plot moves along crisply.

In the Doodoo with Voodoo. A Cozy Mystery
It's Amanda's last day on the job for the police and she's still in awe that she's giving up her safe routine position in the police force for working with Tempest Michaels Paranormal Investigative Services. The first case she takes deals with a young woman who feels she's cursed by voodoo. Now she must follow the clues and find the culprit to save a young woman. Alongside that she has to make amends to Tempest for the police force using him as bait in a case involving clowns as well as dealing with her beau from a previous case.
Jess Meadows brings Amanda and her friends to live and her voice soothes as well as weave a spell over you as you listen.
Fantastic audio and story!!

Laugh your sox off!
situational-humor, verbal-humor, voodoo, cosy-mystery, laugh-out-loud
Do NOT have a hot beverage nearby when reading this book! The characters are exceptional and many of the situations are just too funny for words. Which is one reason why I will not attempt a recap, and no spoilers here. You wouldn't believe either, anyhow!

Not really enjoying it.
This would have been a good listen if it weren't for the annoying Patience. The author cast her as the fat, sassy, oversexed black woman sidekick. She must be modelled on Lula from the Stephanie Plum books. I found it annoying and not funny at all. It has a good story and the narrator does a great job.
