About this listen

The Malwa Empire has conquered 6th century India and is forging the subcontinent's vast population into an invincible weapon of tyranny. Belisarius, the finest general of his age, must save the world. Guided by visions from a future that may never be, he and a band of comrades penetrate the Malwa heartland, seeking the core of the enemy's power. And when Belisarius leads the forces of good, only a fool would side with evil.

The future reaching back in time to pull strings

In the Heart of Darkness is the second installment of the Eric Flint / David Drake collaboration of the Belisarius series. Two future societies are competing to rewrite history in their favor by assisting two sixth century empires. The Malwa in India are opposed by Belisarius representing the Eastern Roman Empire. Belisarius has traveled to India to ‘spy’ on the Malwa, feign possible traitorous actions as well as avoid the Roman emperor who is being misled. His wife meanwhile focuses on developing strategies for some of the novel weaponry provided. Belisarius eventually is forced to leave under nail-biting circumstances. At home, he finds a coup in progress and saves the empire.

Flint / Drake offers an engaging alternate history with a real-life military genius. The action is nearly non-stop. One interesting aspect surrounds the visions of future warfare that Belisarius has neither the language nor conceptual principles to understand, but always seems to manage to glean some nugget of useful information. He also gets somewhat testy with his future link and engages with the Malwa counterpart.

The narration is great with solid character distinction. Pacing is smooth a bit brisk.

Characters develop better with each installment and plot thickens as locals change. Can't wait for rest!
