Story
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas". As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. Amazing what can go wrong with a plan...
This dark and twisted mystery/horror/comedy Hybrid will keep you on your toes pretty much from the start trying to guess who did what. This has so many twists and turns it will keep you guessing until the end, which has a satisfying payoff. Great characters, not entirely sympathetic, are scattered throughout, and the plotting is well paced. Neal Arango does a great job narrating, really bringing the characters to a life of their own.I would definitely recommend this book.

Great Writing!
I loved this audiobook! The story from multiple perspectives was a great way to tell this story. The way the author intertwined all the details of the night at The Place was amazing to say the least!
The characters were believable and detailed with recent histories of most of them. Every page my curiosity grew more and more. I could hardly wait to keep reading till the end.

Wow, great story!
This book had me guessing all the way through. Donnie J. Burgess really knows how to weave a twisted tale. Very dark but also a fair amount of humor.
Narrator Neal Arango does a great job bringing the story and the characters to life. Listening to this book in the car really made my daily commute to work enjoyable.
Highly recommend this one.

Lies, secrets and dead bodies
In the shadow of Angels is a very intense, dark and suspenseful thriller and it defenitely had me sitting on the edge throughout the story. The story begins in the past and then revolves about one Saturday night where the protagonist Devan goes out for a night on the town with friends and his wife.
During the night we go through a lot of heart pounding supense with creepy characters and creepy language. Secrets are revealed, everyone is in a desperate trouble and just when you think you know it all, the story twists around and takes a new turn. The author Donnie J. Burgess is absolutely brilliant and he has managed to develop the characters to the fullest.
I enjoyed the narrator Neal Arango. He did a great and very enthusiastic bad-boy-performance. He made the story come to life so well, that there's no way you'll fall asleep during this book. I'm sure he has done a vivd job in getting to know these charaters and he performes with different voices and tones for each character.

This book was very well written. I liked how it went from everyone's point of view or angle. There were so many twists and turns and at times I had to stop listening for fear of what might happen next. It would be a great comedy of errors movie.

Darkly Comic Satiric Murderous Mayhem
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would to someone who likes this genre. It is original and a bit unique.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Not exactly on the edge of my seat however there were surprises.
Have you listened to any of Neal Arango’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is my first listen and he did a fine job with the narration.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Not really. Maybe the ending just a wee bit, as it seems that the blackmailers had something on everyone and no one was with out secrets.
Any additional comments?
All the bad guys in this book get murdered. There are a pair of black mailers consisting of the town whore and a sleazy PI. They are the ones who start the trouble. The manipulative seductress is amply named Jezebel. She makes her living seducing rich men with her partner the sleazy PI filming the indiscretions. Then there is the weaselly psychiatrist. Our hero and heroine are Beth and Devin, an all American couple. Then there are Devin's long time buds Brent and Jimmy. Brent and Jimmy are a Bevis and Butthead like duo. These are the main characters. Devin has been snared in Jezebel's trap, and now Devin and Beth are receiving marriage counseling from the weaselly psychiatrist Ulysses Stevens. This psychiatrist has also been caught in Jezebel's snare. Jezebel gets murdered and the fun continues.
There are surprises and a dark comedy of errors ensues. The book is an enjoyable listen and a bit unique in that the victims are the bad guys. The ending is also surprising. It is a light and different listen nicely narrated.
