About this listen

On the central and north coast of British Columbia, the Great Bear Rainforest is the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world, containing more organic matter than any other terrestrial ecosystem on the planet. The area plays host to a wide range of species, from thousand-year-old western cedars to humpback whales to iconic white Spirit bears. According to local residents, another giant is said to live in these woods. For centuries, people have reported encounters with the Sasquatch - a species of hairy, bipedal man-apes said to inhabit the deepest recesses of this pristine wilderness.

Driven by his own childhood obsession with the creatures, John Zada decides to seek out the diverse inhabitants of this rugged and far-flung coast, where nearly everyone has a story to tell, from a scientist who has dedicated his life to researching the Sasquatch to members of the area’s First Nations and a former grizzly-bear hunter-turned-nature tour guide. With each tale, Zada discovers that his search for the Sasquatch is a quest for something infinitely more complex, cutting across questions of human perception, scientific inquiry, indigenous traditions, the environment, and the power and desire of the human imagination to believe in - or reject - something largely unseen.

Better than 5 stars

Absolutely well written and detailed. As much about sasquatch as there is about first nations people and their lives. So fulfilling that I wish there was a book 2 to go with it. Extremely well read. You are sucked in and even at the end you find you're saddened that it's over.

Refreshing naritive with unbiased dialog. 👍👍

I enjoyed how the author revisited old stories and compared them to new encounters looking for discrepancies and similarities.

A different perspective on Sasquatch

This is a well written, deeply descriptive journey into the great Pacific Northwest in search of the Sasquatch phenomenon. The perspective of modern day locals provides a realistic view of how they perceive the Sasquatch and paints a wholistic picture of their experiences, historical teachings and associated beliefs.

Written by an anti-capitalism, anti-Christian liberal

Somehow, the author goes down innumerable rabbit trails in this book about Bigfoot—including how the White’s raped and pillaged the Muslims during the crusades, how capitalism is destroying the planet, how whites enslaved natives and forced Christianity on them, and many more diatribes.

This was supposed to be a book about Bigfoot, no?

He admonishes men who carry guns in grizzly country, saying that perhaps they just don’t understand how to calm a grizzly.

This type of naïveté is found throughout the book.

Plus, it’s just a boring text. I grinder through it though, from beginning to end, hoping he saved the best for the end.

He didn’t.

Not for me

Has an air of superiority. Is written like this is the one and only real book on the topic and all other works, books, tv shows, documentaries, etc. are inferior. I could not finish it. I can only hope it got better.
