About this listen

When a wife becomes the prime suspect in her husband’s murder, this criminal psychologist must forget everything she thought she knew in order to clear her name in this debut psychological thriller, perfect for fans of Shanora Williams’ The Wife Before.

Cassidy Evans is the blueprint. As a criminal psychologist, Cassidy is a savant. She spent years solving groundbreaking cases by shifting through the minds and behaviors of those driven by the darkness that controls them. After years of dedicated field work, Cassidy decides to retire and share her expertise of killers’ mentalities as a novelist.

As a published author, she’s now happily married and spends most of her time traveling the world and sharing with others how to understand the twisted minds that drive bad behaviors. Unfortunately, with all of the knowledge that Cassidy is armed with, she somehow overlooks the lies of the person closest to her. When she tags along to a crime scene with an old colleague Cassidy is shocked to discover that the victim is her husband. If that’s not enough to send her world spiraling, she also finds out that the identity of the murdered victim doesn’t match the name on their marriage license.

Things quickly escalate when Cassidy becomes the main suspect. Not knowing the man she is married to is the least of Cassidy’s problems. Everyone believes she is a murderer, and none more than the lead detective on the case—Nathanial Davis.

He is determined to find the truth while proving to the world that Cassidy isn’t who she claims to be. In doing so, he decides to keep Cassidy close while digging through her past to uncover all of her untold truths.

While she’s hiding secrets that could totally destroy the world she spent years building, Cassidy learns that things are never what they seem. With such an intricate familiarity of seeing through lies, how is it that Cassidy is happily married to a man who she loves and adores, but doesn’t truly know? Suddenly, losing her career is far less important than maintaining her freedom. In the end, she may lose both.

𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫: Eden Lafon
𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: 5/5
𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰: Eden Lafon really enhanced the story. She did such a great job and truly brought the characters to life. There were so many different characters and she was able to breath life into them all! I appreciated that I was able to differentiate between the FMC and MMC even though it was one narrator doing both voices. That is true talent! Another thing that I absolutely loved was that there were a few characters that has different accents (i.e. British) and Eden was able to seamlessly transition between the different characters while doing the accents perfectly. This was my first time listening to an audiobook with this narrator and I am so happy I found her because she was sooooooo good. The story was already excellent but she made it a million times better through her narration.

K.C. Mills is one of my favorite authors and I have read several of her romance novels. When I heard that she was going to be releasing a mystery thriller, I was excited. Although my favorite genre to read as of late has been romance, I knew that if K.C. Mills wrote it, the genre did not matter….it was going to be good! And boy was I right.

I loved the suspense, mystery thriller, with a dash of romance. This was a perfect recipe for a book and really took me back to my younger years when I exclusively read murder mystery novels.

The main character in this novel is Cassidy Evans. She was an esteemed criminal psychologist and forensic profiler who is now being accused of murdering her husband; a man who she now discovers is not at all who he appeared to be. In addition to having to work to prove her innocence, Cassidy is also forced to grapple with the fact that the man she had given her heart to and had been married to for all of these years, was really just a stranger.

Nathanial Davis is the detective in charge of solving the murder of Cassidy's husband. Though Davis initially believed that Cassidy was involved in her husband's death, a set of circumstances leads him to change his mind and push the two closer together. What starts off as a partnership to prove Cassidy's innocent looks like it may lead to much more than these two expected.

This story had some unexpected twists and turns and really kept me on my toes! The characters were well developed and I loved that we were given both Cassidy and Nate's childhood stories. These two were so much more alike than they thought and that's what really brought them together. The plot was superb and well thought out and the story was very engaging (I read the book in just a few days and the pacing was perfect). Though there was not as much romance as I'm used to in a pure romance novel, the amount we were given was perfect!

As far as who was ultimately revealed to be the killer...I was not expecting that but the author did give us quite a bit of clues that wove all of the pieces together.

Reading this book has reawaken the lover of murder mystery novels in me and I cannot wait to explore this genre more as an adult. I loved K.C. Mills before this, and I am excited to read more of her books in this genre.

I absolutely recommend this book to those who love murder mysteries, thrillers, and romance. There is a little bit for everyone. Do yourself a favor and read this one. You will not be disappointed. 10/10 would recommend.
