About this listen
Family business: A distinct, vital form of business representing 80 percent of all firms in the US, 85 percent in the European Union, 90 percent in the Middle East, and 99 percent in Japan. As the percentages indicate, family business is everywhere.
In Interrupted Entrepreneurship, multigenerational family business member Raméz A. Baassiri seeks answers to an array of hurdles that every family business has faced and could face, not only from the perspective of his own family business but also from the viewpoint of dozens of family businesses that have confronted interruptions and not only weathered the storms, but thrived.
While this is not a one-solution-fits-all book for business interruptions, it is intended as a glimpse into history from which you can derive lessons and gain inspiration for your own exponential possibilities for the future by offering the following:
- A wealth of historical knowledge
- Practical support
- Valuable insight
- Viewpoints that span age, gender, and geography
- Observations not only of the past and present, but of the evolving landscape of the future
Interruptions are uncontrollable, but you can choose how to confront and deal with those interruptions and do so in a beneficial way to your business and your personal well-being.
“Raméz A. Baassiri’s fine book Interrupted Entrepreneurship is full of EI (emotional intelligence) and wisdom on the management of family firms. Structured around his insightful observations on how to appreciate and address the interruptions in our life paths, Baassiri uses his family’s story, and those of many famous families in business, to guide family companies to lasting success.” (Professor John Davis, chair, Families in Business Program, Harvard Business School)

Story
Stephen M.R. Covey has made it his life’s work to understand trust in leadership and organizations. In his newest and most transformative book, Trust and Inspire, he offers a simple yet bold solution: to shift from this “command and control” model to a leadership style of “trust and inspire.” People don’t want to be managed; they want to be led. Trust and Inspire is a new way of leading that starts with the belief that people are creative, collaborative, and full of potential.

Yet quietly, under the radar, a small number of companies have rejected the pressure of endless growth to focus on more satisfying business goals. Goals like being great at what they do, creating a great place to work, providing great customer service, making great contributions to their communities, and finding great ways to lead their lives. In Small Giants, veteran journalist Bo Burlingham takes us deep inside 14 such remarkable companies.

Story
When asked if they'd rather receive aid or work, the world's poorest people will always choose work. But the world's richest countries continue to send aid, targeting the symptoms, not the causes of poverty. Western countries have the best intentions, but charity-based aid often does more harm than good, and billions of people continue to suffer. According to Leila Janah, giving dignified, steady, fair-wage work is the most effective way to eradicate poverty.

Story
A series of shifts are happening in our economy: Millennials are trading in conventional career paths to launch tech start-ups, start small businesses that are rooted in local communities, or freelance their expertise. We are sharing everything, from bikes and cars, to extra rooms in our homes. We now create, buy and sell handcrafted products in our local communities with ease. CEO of Imperative Aaron Hurst argues in his latest book that while these developments seem unrelated at first, taken together they reveal a powerful pattern that points to purpose as the new driver of the American economy.

Story
In 2014, Steve Case launched Revolution’s Rise of the Rest, an initiative to accelerate the growth of tech startups across the country. Rise of the Rest is based on a simple idea: cities can be renewed and rise again if they develop a vibrant startup culture. A visionary entrepreneur himself, Case believes that great entrepreneurs can be found anywhere, and can thrive with the proper support and investment. In fact, they’re key to the American DNA. After all, America itself was a startup. It struggled to get going and almost didn’t make it. Today it’s the leader of the free world, in part because it has the world’s largest economy—a testament to several generations of pioneering entrepreneurs.

When it comes to estate planning and the effective transfer of wealth, most discussions involving the terms wealth and money use those terms interchangeably. Although the two are not the same, most estate planners today do not even broach this concept with their clients or include the less-tangible aspects of wealth as they draft an estate plan. They simply develop an estate plan that prepares the family's financial assets to be dumped, divided, deferred, and dissipated among the members of the next generation.

The company utterly rejects the idea that employees are simply functions to be moved around, "managed" with carrots and sticks, or discarded at will. Instead Barry-Wehmiller manifests the reality that every single person matters, just like in a family. That's not a cliché on a mission statement; it's the bedrock of the company's success.

Eventually every job and every business will become irrelevant. According to Jason Jennings, the past few decades have seen unprecedented shifts: former third-world nations have transformed themselves into high-tech manufacturing powerhouses; technology has democratized business and increased competition in ways never before seen; and customers, used to getting exactly what they want when they want it, are no longer beholden to the corporate giants.

Great storytelling and wonderful takeaways from an outstanding first book .... want more.
I really enjoyed Dr. Baassiri’s first book ... much more than I even expected. The book reads part business, part tribute, part family and all heart. It is written on an approchable style that brought me closer not only family business, but also to the world of innovation, Entrepreneurship and leadership. What does it take to make it in a multigenerational business ? What does it take to navigate the maze of family legacy not only to ensure survival but to thrive in a constantly disrupted world ? Dr. Baasiri takes us down the river to answer these questions in a delightfully readable book that is as fun to read as to listen to in the audio version. I can’t wait to see where the author takes us next. I look forward to his next work which am hoping will be a follow-up to this one, as I left still wanting more. Highly recommended.
