Publisher's summary

It is a few years after Reykjavik Nights closed. Erlendur is now a detective working for the shadowy Marion Briem and is already divorced.

It is 1979. A body of a man has been found in the blue lagoon, which has not yet become the tourist spot it is today. Apparently the victim fell from a great height, and at first the police investigate the possibility that he has been thrown out of an airplane. As soon as they find out who he is - an engineer employed at the American base in Kaflavik - their focus shifts to the base and his work there, related to mysterious flights of classified planes between Greenland and Iceland.

The authorities at the base are not willing to collaborate; in fact they do everything in their power to hinder the Icelandic police. Fully aware of the danger they are running, Erlendur and Marion continue investigating with the help of an officer from the base. In parallel, Erlendur is asked to investigate the cold case of a young girl vanished into thin air on her way to school 40 years earlier.

Not Arnoldur’s best effort.

I don’t think the author knows much about the US military. Maybe they are different in overseas locations.

I enjoy this series

A lot and it really shines with George Guidall doing the narration. The plot/story was ok - but overall a solid four stars

Humanizing tale, great characters, lousy weather

Managed to avoid thriller cliches with a compelling double protagonist double plot. Simple, direct style.

Love this Series

I am not sure why I love this series. It could be the personality of our character or the personality of Iceland. Both survive basically inhospitable landscapes.

This entry in the series is very informative about the history of American military involvement in Iceland and problems between them and the locals.

This is an early period in Erlandur's life, not long after his divorce and estrangement from his daughter who was then in elementary school.

I love George Guidall. He could read the phone book and I would enjoy it!

Good but not great Icelandic mystery

3.5 stars. This promises to be very interesting. I enjoyed the setting and time period. Problem is the crux of the story take a long time time to get going. Second half is much better than the first half of the book. The other characters are very well written, basically stealing the show from the young Inspector that has a somewhat flat personality. I was not a fan of George Guidall narration: he mumbles a lot, with somewhat of a slurred speech style. It took me a while to accept it as OK. He also sounds as an older gentleman, even though the main character is young.

very unique detective stories

I like these mysteries. The characters are not like any others I know. it makes for very entertaining conversations because some are very blunt. the stories are excellent. some folks might find the conversations tedious, but I love them.

5

I'm giving this one a 5. It seemed such a cozy little mystery as it started, then it took off and I did not want to put it down. You get 2 mysteries in one book, lots of interesting life on and off the US fort. I was so nervous as one potentially scary part was coming up I skipped on to the next chapter then sailed through with these characters to the end. It is a 5 in intelligent writing. extra fine sleuthing, narrated by George Guidall!!!!! and might end up being my favorite in this great series I'm working my way through.

Didnt finish

The narration was really irritating, he kept taking breaths mid-sentance when there should have been no comma, failed too take breaths when he should have at the end of a sentence (made for a lot of odd run-on's) and made odd clicks whjle reading--i couldn't stand it! I did not finish it was so annoying.
