About this listen

Two girls. Two tigers. Four years in the wild.

Two girls survive a terrible flood in the Tasmanian bush and are rescued by a pair of Tasmanian tigers who raise them in the wild. Their story of survival is remarkable, as they adapt to the life of the tiger, learning to hunt and to communicate without the use of human language. When they are discovered and returned to civilization, neither can adapt to being fully human after their extraordinary experience. Totally believable, their story will both shock and captivate listeners as it explores the animal instincts that lie beneath our civilized veneer.

Kept my attention

The narrators voice was rough, shark and screechy. Yet this is the exact voice the character calls for. The book moves right along and swooped me into the story.

Entrancing

I was drawn in by not only the story, but by the narration as well. Enjoyed this story very much. Very moving.

An original, unique, and pleasurable listening and reading experience

Where does Into That Forest rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I choose the books I listen to very carefully, so I usually rate them quite highly. That said, this book far exceeded my expectations. I expected it to be good; I didn't expect it to be this good!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Into That Forest?

I loved most the descriptions of the sensory experiences the girls had living in the forest with the tigers, the smells, sights, and the sounds of all the flora and fauna, and how their senses became more keen over time.

What about Lisbeth Kennelly’s performance did you like?

She was completely believable as a 70-year-old woman describing her extraordinary experiences as a child. I thought I might tire quickly of the old woman's quavering voice but it had the opposite effect on me. I felt like I was sitting opposite her on a porch on a summer's evening listening to her story, and I could scarcely move or get up from my place for being so completely in her thrall. I don't really have any way of knowing if her dialect is authentic, but I found it and her diction completely convincing. The story itself, though fiction, is quite believable, and Kennelly's performance of it was as though she had really lived through it herself.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely

Any additional comments?

A wonderful read for a weekend afternoon.

Fascinating story

Very unusual subject matter, but a truly great story. Narrator was difficult to understand, she tried to do an accent without much success.

Heartbreaking, but beautiful.

If you could sum up Into That Forest in three words, what would they be?

Well written, heartbreaking, fascinating

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ernie was my favorite character because he had to view Hannah's tale as an outsider, watching destruction occur without being able to stop it. His kindness wasn't an obligation toward the girls, he wasn't related to either of them, he just was fated in their story.

Which scene was your favorite?

I loved when the seasons turned cold and the girls had follow the tigers on a long hunt toward the ocean in order to hunt seals and sea muscles. They became survivors. This part made me feel as close as the girls were to nature. It gave me a sense of beauty on relying on oneself and to whatever community we create to live.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and no. There were parts that broke my heart and I had to stop listening. This also insn't a story that is gripping like a murder mystery. It's the type of story that you sort of float along with. It is beautiful and tragic.

Oddly mediocre

I loved the book and movie "life of pi". This was recommended to me as a result of that. I found it boring and the main character very annoying. Nothing at all like life of pi.
