Publisher's summary
"What do I have to do to make you wash your hands of me? There's nothing you could do. I will never wash my hands of you."
Nathan McCann thought he didn't want a family. But when he finds an abandoned newborn in the woods, he feels an inexplicable bond with the boy and starts to make plans to raise the child as his own - until the baby's grandmother steps forward to claim him. Nathan makes a request of her, though: to one day bring the boy to meet his rescuer.
Fifteen years later, Nathan gets his wish when the boy and his grandmother show up on his doorstep. Named Nat and now an angry teenager with a criminal record, the boy is once again in need of rescuing. Nathan takes Nat in, swearing to never abandon him. Nathan believes that with love and patience anyone can change. And he just might be right.
From the author of Pay It Forward comes a poignant tale of love, pain, and trusting people to stay by your side in a world where leaving is easy.

Story
What’s happening in Acker’s Gap, West Virginia? Three elderly men are gunned down over their coffee at a local diner, and seemingly half the town is there to witness the act. Still, it happened so fast, and no one seems to have gotten a good look at the shooter. Was it random? Was it connected to the spate of drug violence plaguing poor areas of the country just like Acker’s Gap? Or were Dean Streeter, Shorty McClurg, and Lee Rader targeted somehow?

I loved it
This is not the genre I usually read. But I am so glad that I did. I listened with narration, Jeff Cummings did a spectacular job. The storyline and all the main characters kept my full attention right through to the end. I highly recommend this book.

A lovely story
If only we could all (or even just I) could be as thoughtful and wise as Nathan. Makes you sort of consider what it means to be a good person. It's the sort of book that feels like a warm hug.
The narrator was very good at making it interesting (varying his tone and whatnot, inflection). And he did a great job at points he needed to imitate someone who struggled with speaking, that sort of thing. I think if he was a little better at differentiating voices, such as imitating female voices and whatnot, I would have given him 5 stars too. I don't know if that's a thing that someone can improve or not, but I feel like it's one of the differentiating factors between good narrators and really great ones.
