About this listen

Time flies when you're plundering history.

Farway Gaius McCarthy was born outside of time. The son of a time-traveling Recorder from AD 2354 and a gladiator living in Rome in AD 95, Far's birth defies the laws of nature. Exploring history himself is all he's ever wanted, and after failing his final time-traveling exam, Far takes a position commanding a ship with a crew of his friends as part of a black market operation to steal valuables from the past.

But during a heist on the sinking Titanic, Far meets a mysterious girl who always seems to be one step ahead of him. Armed with knowledge that will bring Far's very existence into question, she will lead Far and his team on a race through time to discover a frightening truth: History is not as steady as it seems.

In this heart-stopping adventure, Ryan Graudin has created a fast-paced world that defies time and space.

Critic reviews

"Graudin depicts the futuristic, high-tech world (2371 C.E.) and the fulsome and frenzied historical settings with equal richness.... A madcap, vivid time-travel tale with a strong ensemble, both indebted and cheekily alluding to Doctor Who and Firefly." ( Kirkus Reviews)
"I've loved all of Ryan Graudin's books, but I love this one the most. Time-traveling thieves skipping through history! Mind-bending in the best way." (Laini Taylor, New York Times best-selling author of Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Strange the Dreamer)

A time travel mishap threatens the world

I LOVED it! Spoiler alert—vague plot details to follow.

Main character Farway McCarthy is wronged, changing the course of his life forever, leading him to become an adventurer another reviewer aptly described as “Dr Who” meets the captain of “Firefly.” The story becomes, however briefly, lighthearted and fun as it you meet the secondary characters. Then a story arch throws you for loop, as the world is in peril and the characters we’ve grown to love must plan to save it!

Great!

This was a really fun story, loved the time traveler lingo and and the comical quirks of the crew. Would have given it 5 stars except there were just a few tiny things at the end that didn't add up for me. Otherwise, loved it.

All the stars!

Had some issues with the fake swear words. They were kind of annoying, but overall such an awesome read.

Incredible!

This story was so well written. Time Travel is hard to nail down, but Graudin did so with much originality while still giving each main character a satisfying arch. A fun adventure with a lot of heart. The narrator did a great job of heightening the feel of tension and bringing the characters to life.

Jodi Taylor Time Travel Jr.

Not quite as good as the time travel of St. Mary's or Time Police... but not bad either. Fills the gap. I don't regret it, but it wasn't quite as solidly built or emotionally glued together.

Good Science Fiction

I really liked the science fiction. What was hard for me was all the romance.
