About this listen

In this epic debut fantasy, inspired by Renaissance France, an outcast finds herself bound to a disgraced lord and entangled in his plot to overthrow the king. Perfect for fans of Grave Mercy and Red Queen!

Brienna desires only two things: to master her passion and to be chosen by a patron. Growing up in Valenia at the renowned Magnalia House should have prepared her. While some are born with a talent for one of the five passions - art, music, dramatics, wit, and knowledge - Brienna struggled to find hers until she chose knowledge. However, Brienna’s greatest fear comes true: she is left without a patron.

Months later, her life takes an unexpected turn when a disgraced lord offers her patronage. Suspicious of his intent, she reluctantly accepts. But there is much more to his story, for there is a dangerous plot to overthrow the king of Maevana - the rival kingdom of Valenia - and restore the rightful queen, and her magic, to the throne.

With war brewing, Brienna must choose which side she will remain loyal to: passion or blood.

I really liked this book, the characters were interesting, the story was original and kept me engaged. the narrator did a great job creating different voices and personalities for each. I would definitely recommend this book as a fun, easy summer read. #goodread #fantasy #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

I found myself a bit bored lost in some overly dramatic moments mmm I just finished an awesome series and this title was on my maybe list. It not my intention to upset those that love it, for me it’s a 3.5 star book. I will get the second one and see what happens in the sequel of the rising of the new Queen. Happy reading!!

It was ok

Love this author but seriously… the narration is horrendous. It sounds like an AI, and not a good one. A shame because the story is good. You’re better off reading the hard copy.

I’m convinced the narration was AI

I enjoyed the premise and the narrator, but the deep relationships of the characters developed out of nowhere and she wasted the potential for an epic by rushing full speed through the major plot points.

interesting concept but very rushed

This book surprised me!!! It had a lot of build up to the point I was about to move on...but I stuck with it and I am glad I did!!! Twist I didn’t see coming, love, betrayal and rebuilding ones home swept me away...

Love, betrayal, friends and family

Some have been critical about the beginning of the book. It may have initially been a bit slow but still suspenseful with excellent description. I’m immediately purchasing the sequel to begin now! Loved it!

Rebecca Ross never disappoints

All in all a good read. Slow in the beginning and sometimes hard to follow but midway it picked up and the story became interesting.

I enjoyed the performance a lot. the story line was interesting but predictable. The use of extreme description became tiresome and felt like I was lead through the story instead of being allowed to experience it. I would recommend this book to friends because it is enjoyable over all.

good story

I had a hard time with this one. The writing was so over the top and the narration was so emotionless that the combination drove me batty. I almost gave up three or four times. I'm glad I held on to the end though, because the story did get better eventually. There were no big surprises or plot twists, everything was predictable but I enjoyed the world. My biggest fault with this book was the relationships, Ross didn't show any development for the relationships. They were just there. One stranger meets another and then BAM they are worth dying or killing or being fired over out of no where. I pretty much live for character development, and the lack there of almost made me give the whole thing two stars. But I liked the concepts of the world so I decided on 3. I probably would have enjoyed this book more had I read it and not listened to it though.

Enjoyable but predictable
