About this listen

Not all guys obsess over tiny details…but Army Special Forces do.

The wall just didn’t look right. Alex has been trying to cope. Life after his deployment had been rough. His ex-wife thought he needed to stop disappointing their daughter. She was right.

He would try harder.

With six hours before his little girl’s fourth birthday party, he saw the anomaly. One wall was too short. Plenty of time to tear out a panel and look behind it. He found a brick wall. His house wasn’t made of brick.

Behind that was another just like the first. He still had time. When the second wall came down, Alex stood and stared at the shining doorway. Next to it, held up by a knife, was a note. It was a warning - and he didn’t listen.

You’ll love being transported through time, to a future unlike anything we’ve imagined, where Alex’s fight to get back home becomes an epic struggle. This first book in the series will blow you away.

a decent time travel yarn

I took a chance on this. I think mine will be the first review on audible. I liked it. Narrator was great and the tale was engaging. I will order the second one too.

Not his best

The first third was so slow I almost gave up on it , pretty dull. It gets better, but is no where as compelling as the middle Falls books. nships that he should have formed over time but doesn't.

It left me with a bunch of questions that really should have been at least touched on at some level.

What kind of father takes a leap through an unknown doorway and leave his daughter behind with no communication about what might happen?

I kept wondering about the main character and why he can't form meaningful relationships with anyone except his dog?

Maybe he will get to this in another book, but way does he call he a time travel story, but include the bare minimum of actual time travel?

Why does he always assume that that time is passing equally on both sides of the door?

All in all, It has its moments, but the author leaves out so much that the book really suffered because of it. I listened while driving on a long business trip so it did help to pass the time, but I didn't find myself listening anytime other than while driving.

Glad it was free to me. I'll probably try the next one but be quick to pull the trigger on a return if it is more of the same.

Mr Inman, you can do better, your seat of your pants style didn't work well on this kind of plot.

Surprisingly compelling

I got this book on a whim - I think it was a free offering. One of those attempts to get you to read the first one, hoping you'll get hooked. I was sure I wouldn't. I just needed a bunch of stories to listen to while I was recuperating from surgery. I was wrong. I loved the book and have since read the second in short order and am downloading the third and final book right now. I just want to stay with the characters a little longer, not ready to let them go. I do like time travel stories, but this one has a creative twist, going forward into the past (you'll see what I mean). Inmon has created a very different, very interesting world. I usually don't prefer lots of fighting and bloodshed although, knowing it's fantasy, it doesn't bother me (if it bothers you, this might not be a book for you), but the thinking behind the strategies employed to defeat the enemy - whoever or whatever it might be - are also interesting and add to the fight to survive. All in all it's an entertaining book - and a series worth investing in - if you like fantasy with a little sci-fi thrown in.

Different take on time travel

I quite enjoyed this book. My only problem with the performance is that I listen to audiobooks so that I can perform other tasks while enjoying them. Narrator uses quiet voice in many instances and I miss quite a bit by having to adjust volume to hear it. Depending on my headset, sometimes I cannot even get the volume loud enough to understand what is being said.

An entertaining trip to the basement!

OK at the outset this offering needed a big jump of disbelief suspension. The plot device ( hidden doorway to a new reality ) is a now time-worn tool in service of launching the real story. At times, our hero Alex Hawk seems too much of a superhero for my tastes, but that is a small quibble for action-oriented listeners.
On balance, this is a solid offering, but for some reason, it struck me as somewhat derivative and plodding. Maybe it was just my mindset ( listening in late summer during the pandemic ). Upon review, it's a reasonable listen, and it's likely I will continue with the series, if for no other reason to get to the character's resolution. Recommended.

Outstanding

Though the violence was extreme, the story was just outstanding and could not wait for the next time to listen! I am looking for the Book 2 right now!

A Fun Adventure

This was a very fun book to listen to! I enjoyed the unique characters. Of course it is FICTION so you have to enjoy being entertained and not take it serious! Ready for the next book in the series!

SPECIAL FORCES FINDS TARZAN-LIKE WORLD

OK, OK. I fudged a bit on the review headline. Alex doesn't walk into a world full of apes swinging from the jungle trees. However, as I read this book (and the ensuing ones), I fondly recalled the Tarzan books I read as a teenager and later the Tarzan movies I watched (including the older movies). As you may recall, Tarzan was raised with the Silverback Gorillas in the jungles of Africa. They were much bigger and stronger than he, yet he learned how to survive and thrive. Tarzan had impeccable moral values, doing all that he could to help all animals--including humans.

Alex Hawk has the same moral values--yet he is no slacker. He knows the law of the land, "Kill or be killed" and uses his ex-military special forces training and ability to plan ahead, train others, and do much, much more than survive. I don't want to say too much because I am afraid that I will give away this book's plot. However, this book is not an "The-Earth-and-Humanity-is-Doomed" novel. Yes. Something horrible happens. But humanity survives and thrives in more ways than one. And the Earth is reborn. What has happened and how Alex Hawk (my newest hero) reacts to it is what this story is all about. And boy is it a ride!

Now, if you are like me, it is time to stop reading this review, go get this book (and the rest of the series), and start reading or listening. You won't be disappointed. #sci-fi #adventure #time-travel

P.S. If you love these books as much as I did, I would like to suggest that you read "The Mists of Kragdon-Ah" (book 6) before "The Prince of Kragdon-Ah" (book 5) to keep the story line in chronological order. It isn't necessary, however, because Shawn Inmon does a wonderful job of integrating the two.

Wanted to like it

I really wanted to like this book. I love the concept but just could not get beyond the robotic narration
