About this listen

When Jamie Maslin decides to hitchhike the entire length of the Silk Road, he decides to travel first and plan later. Then, unexpectedly stranded in Iran - a country he's only read about in newspapers - he wonders whether he'll make it out alive.

After crossing the border on foot from Turkey, Maslin finds himself suddenly plunged into the subversive, contradictory world of Iranian subculture, where he is embraced by locals who are happy to show him the true Iran as they see it - where tourists are treated like royalty, where cab drivers shout abuse at Mullahs from their car windows, where unmarried men and women mingle in Western clothes at secret parties, and where cans of whisky (the possession of which is punishable by lashings) are readily available on the black market.

This is the charming and astonishing account of one Westerner's life-altering rambles across Iran that illustrates first-hand the attitudes and aspirations of a nation in flux.

Editorial reviews

Jamie Maslin's real firsthand account of Iran will change the way you think about the Middle East. In this piece of fast-paced travel writing, Maslin tells about an Iran often left out of traditional American media depictions. Filled with keen insights and uncommon perspectives, this is a must for anyone interested in the zeitgeist and subcultures of Iran. Stephen Hoye's performance relays descriptions of foreign place and foreign people in a relatable way, while still alluding to the danger that lurks around every corner of this often-hostile land.

Pros - Great story of hitchhiking in Iran which demonstrates the genuine nature of most Iranians. Good mix of current culture and historical facts which is insightful.
Cons - Does ramble on at times but still well wort the time.

Insightful & delightful

Enjoyed this tale of Iran even though it started out with a puzzling defense of Iran's 2009 election, insisting that Ahmedinejad won legitimately. This is regarded as nonsense by most Iran observers, who believe the election was outright and brazenly stolen by the regime.

The puzzlement then deepened when the author described financing his trip by participating in medical experiments. I thought, my god, what have I got myself into?

The politics get raised frequently with criticisms of past U.S. and UK actions in Iran. These criticisms are generally fair enough and largely accurate. But the author's opinions on what this checkered past means for the present seem pretty simplistic.

So, don't get the book expecting reliable political analysis. But it is an entertaining and informative record of a trip through Iran that I certainly won't embark on myself. If you are looking for that, it's not a bad choice.

Good book marred by bad politics

The feedback regarding the welcoming & giving nature of the Iranian people (not to be confused with the Iranian Govt.) The scenery was described majestically.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes. I listened to it while walking the dog & sewing.

Any additional comments?

All Americans should read this book BEFORE characterizing all Iranians in the Access of Evil Box! Made me want to travel there as well, however as a woman I don't think I would be as welcomed as Jamie was...
