About this listen

Experience the first book in the Maztica Trilogy by Douglas Niles - set in Maztica, the exotic corner of the world of Forgotten Realms.

Just as Erix a slave girl learns of a great destiny laid upon her by the gods themselves, across the sea, a fateful mission of exploration embarks. The explorers, a legion of seasoned mercenaries, sail westward to discover a land of primitive savagery mixed with high culture, of brutal, bloodthirsty gods and lavish treasures. Under the banner of their vigilant god, Helm, the legion claims these lands for their own. Only as Erix sees her land invaded by these strangers, when her world itself starts to collapse around her, is her startling destiny revealed.

Surprising

I was very surprised to find that the story, written in 1990, was not as insensitive as one would guess by the date of publishing or the cover art. It’s by no means the greatest story ever, but it was engaging all the way for me, and my fears of the conquistador stand-ins being treated like heroes the whole time were assuaged once I realized that most of focus lay with the character of Erixitl. If anyone is on the fence because of fears of classic 2e racism, I would recommend giving the book a shot anyway.

So so at best...

Forgettable characters and story. Barely okay. But that being said, if the other books are on sale - id buy

Read About Halruaa if you want This in Forgotten R

What disappointed you about Ironhelm?

Doesn't fit in Forgotten Realms well. Went at snail pace and didn't really ever have an upswing.

What could Douglas Niles have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Maybe not wrote this in Forgotten Realms.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Slow Native American English dialect was far too slow on a slow paced book. Needed more pace. Good to sleep to.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment.

Any additional comments?

Go for a book based in Halruaa (better area for this sort of feel in Forgotten Realms).
