Publisher's summary

Dennis Schleicher's life has been anything but easy. The growing realization that he was gay coupled with his parents' use of religion to justify abuse and neglect led Dennis to have a very complicated relationship with love, God, and organized religion. After suffering a violent hate crime, forced institutionalization, and heartbreak after heartbreak, Dennis was desperate for love and acceptance - he just didn't know where to find it. Walk a mile in Dennis's shoes and see from his eyes how the only love that can truly make you whole is that of the Savior.

Love louder

I love this book. I love how vulnerable Dennis gets about his life and his experience before his conversion and after his conversion. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints and I appreciate him being vocal about his conversion! We should all be like Dennis with our testimonies of the Savior! There’s a lot of work to do to bridge the gap for not only LGBTQ but others who are seeking for truth and light and are held back by the lack of fellowship. Again, thank you Dennis for sharing your story!

So touching!

I am an active LDS woman born & raised in our church. I am definitely interested in the plight of our brothers & sisters who don’t fit the typical mold of a “Mormon.” Homosexuality is definitely a challenge for someone who feels the Spirit & identities with the teachings of The Gospel of Jesus Christ. There are other obstacles (disability, racism, obesity, poverty, mental illness etc.) Anyway, I was so touched reading Dennis’ story and felt the Holy Spirit so strongly. If anyone is dealing with an obstacle in their faith, I highly recommend this book. I think most of us deal with obstacles at some point & Dennis’ positive outlook & great love for all of God’s children brings the Spirit. I’m so glad I read this. It truly uplifted me. Thank you.

Very Enjoyable!

I listened to Dennis’ book while driving to Utah, where he just happened to be that same weekend. Oh how I wish I could have met him and told him how much his book touched my soul! My gay son, who is the polar opposite of Dennis, is very hostile towards the church. I’m so glad there are gay people like Dennis who have made the most difficult decision to join the church knowing they will never be able to be in a same sex relationship again. Dennis explains his journey in a very open, honest and often humorous way! I LOVED this book!!

4.9 stars

I loved the author’s personal story and learning about how a member of the LGBTQ+ community can and is still loved and accepted in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The only thing that bothered me was a cultural reference to how church members pray in public/at restaurants. How a person chooses to pray is as personal as how they choose to dress. There are no rules for how to pray in a restaurant. People can pray silently, or choose to pray aloud with their family/friends at the table. There is no right and wrong way. Whatever way makes a person feel most comfortable and allows for reverent communication with Heavenly Father. Just my two cents. Otherwise, I loved this book and recommend it to anyone curious about the LDS faith.
