Publisher's summary

In this laugh-and-cry-out-loud, memoir-esque exploration of selfhood, Zach Zimmerman dives into the pros and cons of retiring a Bible-Belt-dwelling, meat-eating, God-fearing identity in exchange for a new lease on life—one of vegetarianism, atheism, queerness, and humor. Whether learning to absolve instilled religious guilt or reminiscing over Tinder dates gone wrong, this book is a candid and hysterical look at one person's journey toward making peace with the past and seeking hope in the future.

HILARIOUS WRITING: Featuring pieces that were originally published in the New Yorker, Is It Hot in Here (Or Am I Suffering for All Eternity for the Sins I Committed on Earth)? is a literary gem.

RELEVANT AND INCLUSIVE: Zimmerman navigates obstacles in the queer community with essays that are not only humorous and heartfelt, but also act as guiding anecdotes.

ESTABLISHED AUTHOR AND COMEDIAN: Zimmerman has written dozens of New Yorker humor pieces and essays, a Billboard Top Ten comedy album that debuted at #1, and has been featured in New York Magazine, the New York Times, TimeOut, Vulture, and more.

Wonderfully fun!

A genuinely enjoyable exploration of his life and imagination. I’m always happy to ride around in the perspective of somebody who cares so deeply.

my new favorite

Much in the same vein as David Sedaris, Zach's essays run the gamut between lists and heartache...but mostly stopping at the intersection of belly laugh and guffaw. I loved listening to the narration and honestly will be purchasing a hard copy of this to read again.

Charming & funny

An excellent collection of short stories, comedy pieces, and memoir. The writing is often poignant and vulnerable without veering into maudlin.

The narration is great - wry and quiet. Makes you lean in a bit. Highly recommend this quick & funny listen!

Voice of our times

There’s something universal about Zach Zimmerman’s writing and comedy. His family is not my family, and his sexcapades are not my sexcapades. But there’s a vulnerability to every story that keeps his humor honest. I found myself highlighting sentences that were insights into my own psyche, like: “The gap between who I am and who I want to become is never larger than when I’m packing” and “Family members always have the nuclear codes for each other.” All in all, this memoir from a queer, Southern son of a preacher man runs the gamut from the sacred to the profane. Oh, and I recommend the audiobook so you can hear the comedian deliver the punchlines himself.

Funny, Relatable, Emotional

I laughed a lot, cried a little, and loved the whole thing. Especially relatable if you grew up in a religious household.

Enjoyable short listen

Filled with zingers. "I guess no one's having salad." 😂 Looking forward to more from him.

Disjointed

I wanted to like it but it felt like a stream of consciousness riff with no real point.
