About this listen

A new rip-roaring essay collection from the smart, edgy, hilarious, unabashedly raunchy, and best-selling Samantha Irby.

Irby is 40, and increasingly uncomfortable in her own skin despite what Inspirational Instagram Infographics have promised her. She has left her job as a receptionist at a veterinary clinic, has published successful books and has been friendzoned by Hollywood, left Chicago, and moved into a house with a garden that requires repairs and know-how with her wife in a Blue town in the middle of a Red state where she now hosts book clubs and makes mason jar salads. This is the bourgeois life of a Hallmark Channel dream. She goes on bad dates with new friends, spends weeks in Los Angeles taking meetings with "TV executives slash amateur astrologers" while being a "cheese fry-eating slightly damp Midwest person," "with neck pain and no cartilage in [her] knees," who still hides past due bills under her pillow.

The essays in this collection draw on the raw, hilarious particulars of Irby's new life. Wow, No Thank You is Irby at her most unflinching, riotous, and relatable.

“As fitting a response to 2020 as I can imagine... Wildly, seditiously funny.... Read Irby because she knows what it means to live with a fair amount of panic and largely indoors.... She might be our great bard of quarantine—with an unimpeachable daytime pajama look.... This is her voice: deadpan, confiding, companionable.... [Her] three collections, which span a decade, ought to be read together, with this latest as a coda, striking its valedictory note.” —Parul Sehgal, The New York Times

“Samantha Irby’s Wow, No Thank You is a gift that everyone should give themselves and each other. She writes with such wisdom about our culture and such honesty about herself. And nobody—but nobody—is funnier. Every time I read Irby, I feel freer.”—Glennon Doyle, Hello Sunshine

Samantha Irby is a genius
"From the second I saw the title Wow, No Thank You this phrase instantly became my new battle cry. Try saying it right now—doesn't it feel great?! It's handy in so many situations!! Samantha Irby is a genius. I like to picture her typing away in her attic in Kalamazoo, cackling out loud every once in awhile when she comes up with a particularly funny line. Her latest essay collection is a pure delight, but I especially love the glimpse we get behind the curtain as Sam tries to adjust to her new life as a successful writer: the ins and outs of getting a book deal, how she wound up collaborating with Broad City's Abbi Jacobson, and what it was like to write the fat-positive pool party scene of Lindy West's Hulu series, Shrill. She remains as charmingly baffled by her success as ever, and if there are any network executives reading this: can we get that Abbi Jacobson / Samantha Irby project stat, please??"—Rachel S., Audible Editor

Like time with a best friend

Samatha Irby stays open and raw every time I read her work. I like the way she can bring humor to even the most embarrassing situation. So adult.

Don't listen in public!

Seriously, laughing out loud while taking my daily walks got me some looks but it's impossible to hold back! Excellent book!

My new favorite author

I experienced so many lingering laugh out loud moments. Relatable, vulnerable, cathartic. I’ve ready Meaty as well and I now consider myself a hardcore Irbanite.

a must listen to

I'm pretty sure Samantha Irby is me in an alternate universe. I relate to her on so many levels and issues. She's hilarious and down to earth and if you like laughing, listen to the book. it's best that it's read by her, so she can put the emphasis in all the right spots. 10/10 would recommend.

Funny

Her sense of humor and lifestyle description is hysterical. Poking fun at online influencers and herself all at one. Pure fun.

Sam is a true gem and so is this book

There is no better way to consume this glowing "bowl of dog food" than to hear Samantha Irby's dry and genuine voice reading it to me. I could listen to this gal talk all day. Can she just narrate my life while I live it? Her stories are hilarious not only because they are a true human's experience, but because Samantha is a comedic national treasure.

Samantha Irby makes me LOL IRL

not often do I laugh out loud like a crazy person when listening to audio books. That was the case here AND with all of her books on audible. Makes my commute fly by.

Thoughtful, insightful, funny, lovely

I absolutely loved this book. Samantha Irby’s writing style is perfectly reflected in her audiobook performance. It’s pleasant to listen to and kept me laughing. It’s thoughtfully worded, insightful, and made my brain happy. I’ve now listen to all of her audiobooks and they’re all the same caliber of excellence. Sometimes I worry when the author is also the performer, but never with Irby, as she’s just as talented at performing as she is writing. I’m grateful to the author for making my brain happy and relaxed, and I think other people who suffer from potentially embarrassing chronic illnesses (me, hi!) and healthy people alike will enjoy this!
