About this listen

The anticipated memoir from a sports entertainment fandom legend.

As a kid growing up in New York in the late '50s, Bill Apter fell in love with professional wrestling, and it wasn't long before he was rubbing shoulders with the greats as a young reporter and photographer. He's since become the world's best-known wrestling magazine personality, and he's had professional and personal relationships with a who's who of the business, like Triple H, Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Sting, and Ric Flair.

In his fun-loving memoir, Bill Apter takes us from the dressing rooms of the Bruno Sammartino era and the last days of the territories to the birth of WrestleMania, the emergence of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, and the "Attitude Era" to today's WWE Superstars like John Cena, Daniel Bryan, and Roman Reigns. He also shares stories of his days photographing boxing stars like Muhammad Ali and other champions, and he documents his appearances on the WWE Network and his work as editor of 1wrestling.com.

Find out which wrestler threatened him, learn about the dead wrestler who was really alive, and discover how hanging out with Andy Kaufman led to the comic's notorious feud with Jerry "The King" Lawler. Still intimately involved in the wrestling business, the award-winning Apter has a story on everybody.

Featured Article: 5 Truly Wild Pro Wrestling Memoirs

When people discuss wrestling, one thing that always seems to come up is whether or not it's "real." The WWF (now the WWE) became incredibly popular in the 1980s, and its breakout stars were seemingly everywhere. Whether or not you believe wrestling is staged, there is no denying that it is incredibly physical, challenging entertainment. Pro wrestling draws millions of fans to the stands every year, and the wrestlers themselves are in amazing physical shape, performing wild stunts and risking injury night after night.

Excellent Brain Candy!!

A true joy to listen to Bill Apter share his life story . Bill was THE wrestling journalist/photographer from the early and mid 70's - the time a 12 year old fell in love with Pro Wrestling. I eagerly scooped up The Wrestler and Inside Wrestling any time I had some extra money. His performance on the audiobook is really entertaining. I highly recommend to Pro Wrestling fans.

A good collection of quick stories

A good collection of quick stories. It doesn't really follow a "set" story, so except for the last couple of chapters you can feel safe going back and re-listening to certain parts (a "chapter jumper" as Apter himself says in the opening disclaimer). If a character who is a major player in a previous chapter is mentioned again or an event is referred back to, Apter will recap it quickly, making it so prerequisite chapter reading isn't necessary. Apter himself is a charismatic guy and easy to listen but seems to kind of trail off slightly. He reads the book at times as if he's less reading the book and more holding a conversation. It didn't bother me, being a podcast guy. But if you're big on the audiobook being as close to 1:1 with the written material as possible, I could imagine it being an issue. He never goes into a large tirade and is back to the text within a couple of seconds.

If you are a wrestling fan, this is a must read.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. The stories told by Bill Apter are captivating and as a wrestling fan, this audiobook hooked me from chapter one. I've already been telling friends and family who are wrestling fans that they will come away with an unbelievable respect for Bill and the business as a whole.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Is Wrestling Fixed??

The most memorable parts of this book are the stories about Curt Hennig, Taz and of course Jerry Lawler and Andy Kaufman; which I watched play out on television when I was 5 or 6 years old.

What does Bill Apter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I recently chatted live with Bill for the first time on YouTube. When I asked about the audio version, he addressed me personally and told when I listen to it, pretend he is in the room with me, telling me the stories. I did just that and it made the experience of hearing him in his own voice tell these amazing stories even more special.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wanted to, but I bought it late at night. I've sat up late into the night on a couple of occasions listening to this wonderful audiobook.

Any additional comments?

To a certain degree, I feel like I truly know Bill Apter. My respect for Bill increased even more when I heard him talk about helping people with disabilities find work. I am severely visually impaired and recently lost my job of 9+ years as an office worker, so I understand how important that kind of work is. It hits home with me. I would love to one day meet Bill and have drinks, Orange Fanta of course. Why Orange Fanta? If you don't know, read the book and find out. Thank you Bill. Listening to your book was an absolute joy.
