Publisher's summary

Once again, Kinsey Millhone, America's favorite female P.I., embroils herself in a complex and entertaining Alphabet Murder Mystery.

When Wendell Jaffe, mastermind of a real-estate scam, disappeared at sea, no body was found. Now, five years later, he's declared legally dead, and California Fidelity has to pay up on his life insurance policy, to the tune of half-a-million dollars. Soon after, the tune slides off-key when Jaffe is spotted in Mexico and Fidelity hires Kinsey Millhone to sort things out. Oddly enough, Kinsey's investigation of the con man's past triggers a surprising inquiry into her own family history. And, as the two stories intertwine, our favorite P.I. finds herself facing dangerous consequences.

The Whole Series is Great

I am on my second time reading the series. This series really is a classic , and the best of the female detective genre.

Another well done story

Like others in this series, “it ain’t over till it’s over.” Keeps you guessing until the end.

One of Sue Grafton BEST'

Of all the Alphabet mystery books written by Sue Grafton this is one of my absolute most favorites! Great mystery, great plot, good suspense, excellent character development and perfect narration. I love this book and highly recommend it to anyone

Listening to this story the past couple days made me miss Sue Grafton. I so wish there were more writers like her. I’m constantly looking for books as easy to listen to and be entertained by as these and almost nothing compares. Thank you Sue for sharing your talent with us.

Missing pieces

A few details were left incomplete about the characters and incidents that arose. I would've liked more closure on some things

A worthwhile addition to the series.

I enjoy this series, even if some of Kinsey's behavior is inconsistent. I really like Mary Pfeiffer's narration. These are always a great palate cleanser between heavier stuff like Clancy.

good listen

I like the Kinsey Millhone series. The reader is very good and sounds like the person in the story would sound.

Narrator made a big difference

While I enjoyed the story, I couldn't get used to this narrator. Judy Kaye will always be Kinsey to me. Mary Peiffer's impression of Henry was so unrealistic. She made him sound like a young man. I guess I'm not used to her yet. I liked the fact that the book was unabridged, but I wish it was Judy Kaye performing it. Mary wasn't awful, but I need more time to get used to her style.

Not Everything Is As It Seems

Nice surprise for Kinsey comes about while investigating. Quicker pace, couldn't put it down. (Actually, couldn't stop listening.)
