About this listen
In this comic retelling, young Jack foolishly sells his family's cow for a handful of magical beans. Overnight, they grow into a beanstalk that reaches up beyond the blue sky itself, leading Jack into a hilarious series of misadventures with a dimwitted ogre and his extra-large spouse. This beloved English folktale, adapted by Eric Metaxas, is nearly as merry and old as England itself. Narrated by Michael Palin, of Monty Python fame, with an original musical score by David A. Steward. Ages five and up. Part of the award-winning Rabbit Ears collection, We All Have Tales.

The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. "Who is that Philistine that he dare defy the armies of the Lord God?" he asks the trembling soldiers.

bizarre music, fun story
This was a hard one to rate. The writing was fun and engaging, and the narration pretty good. But the music was so surreal and so entirely out of keeping with the story that it almost seemed like a joke.

Too much music
The story telling was good, but the music in the background took away from the reading.. very hard to listen to.

The story was great but...
The actual story and the narration were both fine (what’s bot to love about Michael Palin!) but the accompanying music was over the top - too dramatic and even too loud for the narration at times. My son loves this story - I’ve told him the story many times. The music in this version scared him... so it’s back to Mummy the Narrator.

Bizarre music
My kids love this tale, as do I. The music is just too odd to actually listen to this story.
