About this listen

From the Author of The Guild of the Cowry Catchers:

While the crew of the Scarlet Albatross struggles to survive her harrowing voyage, Gerard is busy keeping his promise to his father. He and Silveo return to Holovarus for a brief farewell visit. However, chaos is threatening to overwhelm the Great Islands, and even little Holovarus will not be spared. Gerard's father and brother are facing difficult decisions, and they need help. Gerard feels torn between his old kingdom and his new family.

The situation only grows more complicated when the crew of the Scarlet Albatross limps into port, bringing old enemies and a child Silveo didn't know existed. Jager Thunder is a sequel to both The Scarlet Albatross and The Guild of the Cowry Catchers sagas.

Strong performances and aweseom story

Book 2 of a series (even if it's the second trilogy for an on-going story) is always a hard one to pull off, as it's a bridge from the arching story intro and it's conclusion. Hilton dose a great job pulling together the casts of characters from the first trilogy and those in the first book of this series. The politics are great. Lots of well done action, though the final night dose go on for many, many chapters, as the large cast is spread out doing a lot of different things. Still it's easy to follow along what each group is doing. The performances are great. Outfield keeps the various voices distinct and easy to keep track of. Harris has a great reading voice, very easy to listen to. My only complaint is Harris' voice is a bit soft, and sometimes hard to hear if one is riding a subway.

Abigail Hilton hitting full stride

Abigail Hilton is quickly becoming a modern day Tolkien. Tolkien's masterpieces Lord of the Rings reflected World War One and its effect on society. Abigail Hilton has reached a rarely achieved level of storytelling, world building and most importantly character development that mirrors modern day society. In her previous series The Guild of the Cowry Catchers, Hilton addressed modern sexuality with Trans and gay characters. In her Refugees series she develops those themes and explores the struggles those character must face in their lives.
Jager Thunder is the second book in the series Refugees by Abigail Hilton. She introduces new technology, gunpowder into her magic world of Panamindorah. This tips the balance of power in a world already unstable from the events in GoCC. The issues she confronts are age old and at the same time current and modern. The admission of refugees fleeing war and the pressure it puts on society seems to be ripped from the headlines and is handled very well.
The fans of GoCC will be glad to be reacquainted with the main characters of Silvio, Gerard, Gwain and the rest too numerous to list. The cast is thrust into an adventure with the crew of the Scarlet Albatross and Anaroo. The Character development is outstanding. The world building is amazing as Hilton continues to expand Panamindorah. Hilton seems to be really hitting her stride as an accomplished and skilled author.
The narration for this audiobook by Rish Outfield and Lauren Harris is amazing. While I missed the vocal talents of Nathan Lowell, Norm Sherman, Chris Lester, Kimi Alexandre, Kim the Comic Book Goddess and R.E. Chambliss, these two new narrators are absolutely excellent. The voice work by Rish and the accents he does really seemed to add depth and a new level of character development. Lauren Harris narrates for Anaroo and the point of view of the Scarlet Albatross crew. Jager Thunder delivers excellent narration and a great story.

Great read and reading

I have been a fan of Abigail Hilton's Panamindorah works for some time now and this installment does not disappoint.

I think this would be a great book on it's own, but it's even better as a congregate sequel to both the Guild of the Cowry Catchers series and the first Refugees novel, The Scarlet Albatross.

I appreciated that the characters and plot are not always predictable and that makes rereading it so much more rewarding.

Highly recommended.

another awesome story!

This is the 2nd book in the series & ties her older series & many excellent short stories in to this new series. You don't have to read the 1st series but this wonderful story won't be nearly as great if you don't. You have to read the 1st book in this series though or you'll be super lost. A wonderful read & listen that you'll discover something new each time you dive into it!

More swashbuckling and not just with weapons

Abby has successfully captured my attention yet again with this even paced return to the cowry catcher universe .
This story takes place at the turning of an age and there are enough elements ease that baton pass . Initially I was and sorta still am worried about what this change will mean for the feel of this adventure on the high seas that I have come to love but by the end you should feel excited to see .
This is queer positive series of books so if you are queer like me or just want more diversity in novels I'd invite you to check the whole series out .
The story is solid but raises some questions about how time is linked in the world ( prophet ) sorta lays he ground work for jager thunder in a cool way .
Abby continues to weave through multiple points of view and no one feels lost .

The hardest thing for me were the voices of older characters, I know the full voice cast is a lot however I really think it would have made the story feel more like the next step and not so brand new , but overall it's not the biggest thing to get over .
I can't wait for the next one

High Tale of Fantacy and Steamy-punky

What a riveting tale of adventure, intrigue and politics. This book takes place as two distinct stories, yet they weave together perfectly.

The first part is suspended in the air in a flying ship, the second a political jostle for power.

I did not see it coming, and now I can't wait to see where it ends...

Thank you Abigail Hilton for another fabulous novel!

Jager Thunder

I really enjoyed Jager Thunder. Best if you’ve already read The Prophet of Panamindora. The characters and places described so well you can almost see them. Great story filled with danger, excitement and even family intrigue. So many aspects of real life woven into a very colorful fantasy world. Keep up the good work. I’m looking forward to your next book. Loved it.

Jager Thunder

Wow! This second installment of the Refugees series was just what I was hoping for! Characters from the first book uniting with old favorites from the Cowry Catchers series. With a strong plot, lots of action and surprises you didn't see coming it's one you will want to listen to over and over!

Tour de Force

Abbie has created a true tour de force - with kings, wyverns, princes and princess, assorted nobility, refugees, ships, airships, introduction of gunpowder, treachery, poison, forgiveness, love, growth, and battles. Rooted in two earlier tales (Scarlet Albatross and The Guild of the Cowry Catchers), Jager Thunder is a sequel to both and best enjoyed after reading both. With the help of two excellent narrators, Abbie weaves characters and plot lines from both of them into an intense and satisfying crescendo. Bravo.
