About this listen

In Jesus the Bridegroom, Brant Pitre once again taps into the wells of Jewish Scripture and tradition, and unlocks the secrets of what is arguably the most well-known symbol of the Christian faith: The cross of Christ. In this thrilling exploration, Pitre shows how the suffering and death of Jesus was far more than a tragic Roman execution. Instead, the Passion of Christ was the fulfillment of ancient Jewish prophecies of a wedding, when the God of the universe would wed himself to humankind in an everlasting nuptial covenant. To be sure, most Christians are familiar with the Apostle Paul's teaching that Christ is the "Bridegroom" and the Church is the "Bride." But what does this really mean? And what would ever possess Paul to compare the death of Christ to the love of a husband for his wife? If you would have been at the Crucifixion, with Jesus hanging there dying, is that how you would have described it? How could a first-century Jew like Paul, who knew how brutal Roman crucifixions were, have ever compared the execution of Jesus to a wedding? And why does he refer to this as the "great mystery" (Ephesians 5:32)? As Pitre shows, the key to unlocking this mystery can be found by going back to Jewish Scripture and tradition and seeing the entire history of salvation, from Mount Sinai to Mount Calvary, as a divine love story between Creator and creature, between God and Israel, between Christ and his bride-a story that comes to its climax on the wood of a Roman cross. In Jesus the Bridegroom, dozens of familiar passages in the Bible - the Exodus, the Song of Songs, the Wedding at Cana, the Woman at the Well, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and even the Second Coming at the End of Time - are suddenly transformed before our eyes. Indeed, when seen in the light of Jewish Scripture and tradition, the life of Christ is nothing less than the greatest love story ever told.

one of my favorite books!

this book is so insightful considering I've served in ministry for years and still hadn't seen what was so clearly found in the cross of Christ--the wedding! I highly recommend it!

This book masterfully connects the dots...

Fascinating!! Why seeing Jesus as a bridegroom changes everything: crucifixion, Ephesians5, and so much more!!

The Crucifix as a Marriage

I learn so much listening to Brant Petrie’s books... I have learned you can’t read the New Testament without the Old Testament... a must read for every Catholic to understand the current debate on marriage.👍👍👍👍

Tracking the Roots of Our Faith

I cannot sing loudly enough the praises of this book! Dr Pitre combines his knowledge of ancient Jewish customs, Patristic and Rabbinic teaching, and Biblical languages to explore the concept of Jesus as fulfilling the prophecies of Yahweh coming as the bridegroom of Israel. Dr Pitre explain aspects of the Old Testament that are not generally explored in modern Christian literature, although they are included in such modern documents as recent Papal letters and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Moving through this book was as though I were hearing a glorious harmonizing of my three favorite things: Judaism, Patristics, and the Catholic Church. When the author deals with such issues as Christian Marriage in the light of Martyrdom, or sin as the breaking of a covenant relationship (rather than breaking rules) I felt as though I was listening to an Orthodox seminary professor... Yet this book is very readable, very graspable.

The narrator was good!

I enjoyed listening to the narrator. I think that the author is a knowledgeable source and wealth of extra added dimensions of ancient roots is what I look forward to sharing with my grandchildren!

good content, but delivery was lacking.

If you could sum up Jesus the Bridegroom in three words, what would they be?

I would sum up Jesus the Bridegroom by saying that is presents the mission of the Messiah from a Jewish perspective, and the reality of the Eucharist as a wedding banquet - very different perspective and it brings a deeper way of seeing the Gospels

Did Mel Foster do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Mel Foster's narration of this book was so mellifluous that I had to take frequent breaks, because although the content was riveting, his voice put me to sleep.

Any additional comments?

This book is worth the price and the time in spite of the narration.
