About this listen

In a house in London, a woman starts a new life, trying to put tragedy behind her. Then a pretty blonde child runs into view, bringing with her an inexplicable suggestion of evil.

Once, Julia Lofting had a husband and a daughter. But everything has changed since she bolted from her marriage, in flight from the unbearable truth of her daughter's death. For Julia, there is no escape. Another child awaits, another mother suffers, and a circle of the damned gathers around her. The haunting has begun....

I don't understand the ending

It was fascinating until it wasn't. It became maudlin, repetitious and muddled. Part of that was due to narrator's tone, but really it was the story! Character were relatively real, plot thickened and then it all just curdled and ended.

Straub classic that still hold up.

Once I started listening to this story I could not stop. I read it many years ago, and it’s even better than I remembered!

suspense

started off slow but ramped up after the second chapter. I would recommend especially if you like somewhat scary stories.

WHAT JUST HAPPENED??

...beside the fact that I just threw away hours of my life. This book gave me just enough to keep me invested. And never had a payoff! It's been a long time since I have been this disappointed with a book. I LOVE Stephen King, so I have absolutely NO IDEA why he praises Straub's horrid writing. In fact, as much as I love King's writing, I am amazed that EVERY book I've tried based on his glowing endorsement has been incredibly bad. I am warning you that if you purchase this novel, you be extremely disappointed.

Disappointed

For the first time I have to say that the movie Full Circle, or in the United States, The Haunting of Julia, is far better than the book. Sorry Mr. Peter Straub, as I enjoy most of your books, especially your collaborations with Stephen King. Maybe it’s because I saw the movie the day before I started reading the book. But some of the vocabulary is very offputting. And it’s not because I’m not British, because I am, or at least British-American now. Or maybe because I think that Mia Farrow and Tom Conti make the story, as well as Colin‘s music.
