About this listen

It's Elvis Week in Memphis, and homicide detective Rachel Sloan isn't sure her day could get any stranger when aging Elvis impersonator Vic Vegas asks to see her. But when he produces a photo of her murdered mother with four Elvis impersonators - one of whom had also been murdered soon after the photo was taken - she's forced to reevaluate.

Is there some connection between the two unsolved cases? And could the recent break-in at Vic's home be tied to his obsession with finding his friend's killer? When yet another person in the photo is murdered, Rachel suddenly has her hands full investigating three cases.

Lieutenant Boone Callahan offers his help, but their checkered romantic past threatens to get in the way. Can they solve the cases before the murderer makes Rachel victim number four?

Great!

Who would have thought Elvis impersonators could be so intriguing! This is a great suspense with likable characters with interesting stories of their own. I love the Memphis setting that’s so easy to picture. Good narrator!

Narrator

She didn’t have enough distinction in her voice to tell which character she was referring too.

Surprising Story

JWright
Because I had enjoyed the suspense and puzzles in other Bradley novels of the series, I downloaded this one; however, when I read the synopsis, I wasn’t sure I wanted to read about “Elvises.”
I was surprised and pleased. Erin’s character was wonderful.

Good book, enjoyed the series

Rachel's Mom was murdered, thought to have happened during a burglary. Now Elvis impersonators are dying. How are they connected? Rachel and Boone set out to discover the truth. When I first read the setting for the book, I thought it sounded cheesy with the impersonators. I was wrong. This book was well done, and all the loose ends get tied up.

HORRIBLE NARRATOR!!!

I really like Patricia Bradley, but this narrator is so bad it is distracting from the story. She has NO excitement and is so boring, she puts you to sleep. I am returning this book and will not be listening to the others in this series because they have the same narrator.

I just can’t relate

I think the problem with all of Bradley’s books is that I just can’t relate to the characters. First of all, no female is going to beat ALL male policemen in fitness tests, especially ones with prior military experience. The idea that ballet makes a better working than military one is ridiculous. Why do writers of female fiction think a male who can be physically beaten by a female is attractive to women? In addition, in this book, WHEN IT REALLY COUNTED, the female protagonist is physically beaten by the female villain. Seriously?

Every one of Bradley’s books have this same tension between male and female protagonists. Males are too protective. Females are too reckless but it should not matter. Females think males do not trust them. Males think females do not trust them. Males have to prove they are not “male chauvinists.” Females have to work to prove themselves because males think they are incompetent. They disrespect male authority but subconsciously seem to need male approval. I just cannot relate.

The tension in the story is based on good people not telling the truth for various reasons. The author attempts to make reasons for this but fails because it means that police investigators are all incompetent everywhere, from Big Sur to Memphis. In addition, characters believe lies about themselves and others. Some things they believe are completely irrational. I can see these beliefs in teens or children, but 35 year olds? Can NO ONE in the book actually confront their feelings or ask others about important things or talk about important facts? “I forgot” or “I did not think it was important” until the female lead is in danger is an all too common occurrence in female fiction.

The plot does not begin to resolve until the last 30 minutes or so when the danger is greatest. The characters don’t find out the most important information until then. Some of this information could have been shared more throughout the story. But what really makes the story seem less authentic is that we see characters’ problems but do not see how they resolve them in a meaningful way. There are no references to the other characters in the previous books in the series. The lack of details in their own character development makes the series a disjointed one. This could just have well been a stand alone novel.

There are things I liked about the book. The reader was pretty good, but she cannot pull off a British accent. I did like the way the investigation and relationship was developing until the rushed ending. I still have problems relating to the way male / female characters think and treat one another throughout the whole series, and this book was more of the same. I did listen to this whole story, though, unlike the previous one. I liked the first book in the series, but like this one, it has a very rushed ending with certain issues unresolved. What is it about the ending that authors find so hard to get right? Not a lot of them pull it off well. At the same time, I can appreciate the hard work it must be to write a book.

I did listen to the whole book so that much shows I liked most of it in spite of my criticism. If it is not good literature, a book should be a good distraction, but this one was ok but not quite enough.

A surprising ending

We've read all 3 books in series. Good narration. Some parts get bogged down in conversations between the characters to the point of losing interest. But then something will (finally) happen. We really appreciate a clean book. No language, no sex, no graphic violence. But a pretty good plot.
