About this listen

When a fire turns your heart into ice, it can’t possibly melt without revealing scars. Adele has lost everyone and everything she loves. Now, she’s coping with an unwanted new reality which includes working as a maid in a chic hotel in downtown Seattle to make ends meet. Uninterested in a relationship, her frozen solitude suits her just fine.

She thinks. When a handsome guest walks into the room she is cleaning and sets her frigid life ablaze again, Adele discovers there is more than one way to burn. Will this new friendship be a smoldering ember or ignite a conflagration which could consume what remains of her heart and soul?

What a beautiful story

Adele lost everything that matters in her life to a fire. She is trying to deal with her new reality, to make ends meet, by working as a maid in a downtown hotel. A guest walks into the room she is cleaning and something happens. He is so nice to her and listens to her. Will her heart remain frozen from her loss?

Shelby Hughes did a great job with the narration. I received this free copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Beautiful

A beautifully narrated story about finding love again when your life takes a sudden and heartbreaking turn. Adele lost everything including her husband and young child to fire. Starting over as a shell of her former self, Adele finds herself cleaning rooms at a luxury hotel. But it is not until she comes across a patron of the hotel, Mason, does she start to live again. But when Mason's true identity as one of the big wigs of the hotel comes to light will Adele fall back into her shell once again or will she find out that you can go on living even when you heart has been broken. Shelby Hughes makes the listener feel all the feels.

finding love after heaetbreak

One night of celebration turned Adele's life into tragedy. Her husband and son died in a fire. Her new life being alone, just being alive, was working as a maid in a posh hotel. A guest came in as she was cleaning his room. He listened to her story, giving her a large tip and a hug. He was Mason Wilcher, part owner of the hotel. He has an interest in her that he wants to continue. She fights it at first, because he's her boss. But she slowly opened her heart up again for love. It wasn't until she discovered a secret he didn't share her world was shaken again. This is a story of finding love again after a heartbreaking tragedy

A quick, sweet romance!

I really enjoyed listening to this story. The characters were both very likeable. It was heartwarming to see Adele find someone who was so good to her after such a tragedy. I'd love to listen to more by this author and narrator!

Mason and Adele

This had a sad tone to the story but develops into hope! It is a really good story and I really really wish Mason was real. I loved this quick listen. The narrator did a good job.

There's always hope!

A year ago, Adele Gordon lost her life as she knew it when she came home from a night out with her friends, only to find her apartment on fire with her son and husband trapped inside. She has spent that year, trying to recover her mental health in a psychiatric hospital, only to awaken to a living nightmare. Having no work experience, she finds a job as a maid in the Wilcher Hotel. She's always been a type A personality and does her job spotlessly. A guest notices her thorough work, but also sees the exhausting sadness in her eyes. He gives her a $100 tip to go home for the rest of the day and relax until her exhaustion passes. She's touched by his unexpected kindness and his impulsive hug warmed her up. What she doesn't know is this caring man is none other than Mason Wilcher, part owner of the hotel chain, making him her boss. It's obvious that Mason senses something in her, something he doesn't want to give up on and continues to pursue her. He slowly and sweetly brings a little warmth into her life, even though she fights it at first. She finally responds to his kindness and interest in her by allowing him to chip at the ice in her heart and coldness in her very being. Everything is looking so good for them until her best friend discovers a secret about Mason that he hasn't shared with Adele. Her world is shaken, but she hasn't given him a chance to explain his side of the story. The journey to their HEA is sweet and so endearing and the epilogue is heartwarming. The only reason this is a 4* rating is that there are time shifts and flashbacks that were a little difficult to follow. The ending includes a flashback that gives it an abrupt feel. It, however, does not affect the overall quality of this story. The narration by Shelby Hughes is excellent. She has a well-modulated voice that gives each character a clear and individual personality. Nicely done!

Some of this story worked, other parts did not

So we are introduced to Adele, who is the main female character. She experienced a huge loss of her husband and son in a fire, and because she had been a stay at home parent, had little to no work experience, and lived in a small studio and works as a maid at a hotel, where she meets her new love interest Mason.

Mason, who is 5 years older, has some secrets of his own, but once he actually admits it to Adele, tho relationship between them seems to grow closer.

I’m not a fan of the sort of thought process “Oh, its been a year since that accident, you need to move on.” the story seems to promote in the early part of the story. First off. Adele lost both her husband and son in a fire, that is not something to be taken lightly.

While Mason was indeed taking the relationship development slow (which was a good thing), the whole event of Adele realizing she was pregnant with his child and rather quickly in the developing relationship, while she had to try for awhile with her deceased husband, seemed to not only put down her prior relationship, but it also fuels the idea that if you’re with the right guy, you’ll end up pregnant right away.

The story was set in Seattle, but I really couldn’t really picture in any major city at all. There was also a line saying Seattle wasn’t that far from Hawaii, and that is so not true in the slightest as well.

The narration was just okay, nothing too great. Not really a fan of the male voice attempt either.

Overall, 3 stars. There are some good things, but also a lot left to be desired.

Touching and romantic

Can a hotel maid fall for one of its customers? Adele is working at the hotel, cleaning rooms. Since the death of her husband and son in a fire, she has been swamped with guilt and is not looking for a relationship. Until she meets Mason as she is cleaning his room. There is instant chemistry and the two spend time together. But Mason is holding a secret, and when it is revealed, will ruin their relationship? Jude Ouvrard packs and emotional punch in her novella. It has a great message of showing that no matter the dire circumstances, life can always get better. Narrated by Shelby Hughes, this heartwarming story leaves you happy and content.
