About this listen

After 15 years away, Kate Hamilton never expected to end up back in her hometown of Asheboro, Maryland, full time. And she definitely didn't expect to be leading the charge of recreating the town as a Victorian village and tourist attraction. But as unexpected as the circumstances are, Kate is ready to tackle them.

The town, on the other hand, is going to take some convincing. Ever since Henry Barton's shovel factory closed down, it's started to seem like there are more tumbleweeds than tourists rolling down Main Street. Kate's ideas are good, but ambitious - and her friends and neighbors are worried that finding the money for them would push the town even further into debt.

Luckily, Kate and historian Joshua Wainwright may have come up with a solution. The Barton mansion, meant to be the centerpiece of the Victorian village, has proven to be a veritable goldmine of documents about the town's 19th-century history, and Kate is convinced the papers hide something of value. When a dead body turns up in the town library - mere hours before the documents were meant to arrive there themselves - Kate begins to worry that the papers spell danger instead of dollars. It seems that someone doesn't want these forgotten secrets coming to light, and they'll do whatever it takes to keep Kate quiet....

Not the Top Series for this Author

Sheila Connolly is a favorite author for me. This book is just ok in my opinion. It has the potential to be a really good series, but it seemed to drag in a lot of places. Since I'm a big fan of the author, I will try another in this series, hoping it will improve.

Good plot

Ms Connolly has come up with a great plot but ....,
The retelling and rehashing of the “ info” from every possible angle gets very old in this book.
More than once I wanted to scream ok ok we get it Sheila!!!
Hoping this series will take off and be better written in the next books.
If it were not a Shelia Connolly novel, I would not come back for more.

Slow and excrutiating

This might be a good book if it wasn't so slow. The characters get bogged down in meaningless conversations that stalls the story. They over think and over analyze everything. It's really annoying. I finally skipped to the end just to see which character is responsible for the murder. Emily Durante did an ok job narrating the story, but she couldn't bring the story life.

Main character ruins a good story concept

The story line is good, but the main character is increasingly entitled, snotty, and annoying. A few of many: She goes through a murder trauma, and her man asks if she’s ok and she huffs, “not very original.” She’s living *for free* in a beautiful home, drinking all the incredibly expensive wine, and when the owner says a friend will be staying a few days, she fumes at his imposition. He owns the house and is letting her stay. The woman helping her *for free* wants to go explore the basement, and she replies, aren’t you supposed to be cataloging? She’s completely entitled and waspish when dealing with everyone, who she expects to give her their time and skills for free, right now, and do it faster! She’s giving repressed mean girl vibes. She’s so incredibly nasty to everyone, and so rude and verbally assaulting to her new boyfriend. Most of her interactions are at least mildly toxic, if not fully snarky, it’s gross and uncomfortable. She ruins a very interesting story.
I won’t be continuing this series.
