About this listen
First Prize for Fiction - 2015 New England Book Festival
...cold, rugged Maine becomes a hot bed of intrigue, murder, and greed, making it difficult for the residents, who love the land and this beautiful state, to continue to live the lives that they have chosen. Pono Hawkins returns to rescue his Special Forces buddy who is wrongly accused of murdering a prominent environmentalist Ronnie Dalt.
Unknown killers stalk Pono as he tries to unravel Ronnie's death. Nothing is certain, no one can be trusted, no place is safe. There's a million square miles of wildlands out there to hide a man's body. And with a rap sheet that includes two jail sentences, Pono is the number one target of every cop in the state.

And in the winter, skiers and snowboarders take over the mountains. Story
It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

Story
My life was ordinary until three years ago when I was thrown out of a downtown hotel window. My name is Robbie Brownlaw, and I am a homicide detective for the city of San Diego. I am 29 years old. I now have synesthesia, a neurological condition where your senses get mixed up. Sometimes when people talk to me, I see their voices as colored shapes provoked by the emotions of the speakers, not by the words themselves. I have what amounts to a primitive lie detector.

Story
Duchess Day Radley is a 13-year-old self-proclaimed outlaw. Rules are for other people. She is the fierce protector of her five-year-old brother, Robin, and the parent to her mother, Star, a single mom incapable of taking care of herself, let alone her two kids. Walk has never left the coastal California town where he and Star grew up. He may have become the chief of police, but he’s still trying to heal the old wound of having given the testimony that sent his best friend, Vincent King, to prison decades before. And he's in overdrive protecting Duchess and her brother.

Story
The town of Northfall, Minnesota, will never be the same. Meteors cratered hardwood forests and annihilated homes, and among the wreckage a new metal was discovered. This “omnimetal” has properties that make it world-changing as an energy source…and a weapon. John Frontier returns for his sister’s wedding to find his family embroiled in a cutthroat war to control mineral rights and mining operations. His father rightly suspects foreign leaders and competing corporations of sabotage, but the greatest threat to his legacy might be the US government.

Good plot
There was just too much description in the story. Waited for ever before it got back to the story.

Who is the murderer?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! There were so many clues and mysteries, that I found myself completely immersed in this action filled book.

Caution: Read skeptically!
Fiction certainly, but more accurately propaganda of the worst kind: full of hyperbolic half-truths; sophomoric anti-establishment rants; full-scale indictment of the military, but unfiltered lionizing of the footsoldier (with special honors reserved for Special Forces); and the most heinous, retrograde, and juvenile characterizations of women to appear in print outside of Breitbart. Yes, the women are smart, accomplished, and capable, but all they really want is to have endless passionate sex with anyone with a penis, but mostly with the first-person narrator. The State of Maine is a caricature, a blank canvas, apparently, upon which the author imposes his pseudo-intellectual morality play: Good writhes in the clutches of Evil. Guess who wins?
This is trash. If you're looking for trash, forge ahead. But before you swallow any of this claptrap, please, fact-check the ingredients.

Just OK
Sexual exploits really did not add to plot or character development. Although I agree with the save the wilderness sentiments completely, often felt like reading an essay, not a mystery.

Great narrator! Storyline boring...
Luke Daniels did a great job of narrating the story. The basis of the story could be covered in two chapters. Stop the government from destroying communities with wind turbines.
