About this listen

"An unflinchingly honest romance." —Kirkus, starred review

From the author of THE MATZAH BALL and MR. PERFECT ON PAPER comes this hilarious and emotional rivals-to-lovers romance.

Step 1: Get the secret recipe. Step 2: Don’t fall in love…

Avital Cohen isn’t wearing underpants—woefully, for unsexy reasons. Chronic pelvic pain has forced her to sideline her photography dreams and her love life. It’s all she can do to manage her family’s kosher bakery, Best Babka in Brooklyn, without collapsing.

She needs hired help.

And distractingly handsome Ethan Lippmann seems the perfect fit.

Except Ethan isn’t there to work—he’s undercover, at the behest of his ironfisted grandfather. Though Lippmann’s is a household name when it comes to mass-produced kosher baked goods, they don’t have the charm of Avital’s bakery. Or her grandfather’s world-famous pumpkin spice babka recipe.

As they bake side by side, Ethan soon finds himself more interested in Avital than in stealing family secrets, especially as he helps her find the chronic pain relief—and pleasure—she’s been missing.

But perfecting the recipe for romance calls for leaving out the lies…even if coming clean means risking everything.

Chronic illness representation

I liked the Jewish rituals and conversation as well as the representation of chronic illness. I really enjoyed Thor relationship.

Very cute!

This is my first book by this author. As I am Jewish I enjoyed the Jewish content. But I did NOT enjoy the mispronunciation of basic Yiddish words like “tuchas” . Can’t someone teach the narrators how to pronounce key words in the story? Very annoying but still the book was fun and enjoyable to listen to.

A thoroughly surprising romance

I absolutely loved the book. It’s a quirky, sweet, funny, and overtly Jewish love story with enough twists and surprises to keep me guessing. It’s truly unique. The emphasis on chronic pain especially connected me to the story.

A true discussion about boundaries and relationships

I liked that they went in depth with the characters and their backgrounds and how they handled their relationship. It wasn’t just sex

Lovely and unexpected

This story took some turns I was not expecting. I love how the author flipped the trope on its head. I loved the way we ended up at Rabbi Jason’s tantric pot den even as the author showed us with such care and nuance what it’s like to live with chronic pain Meltzer always does such a great job of showing the broad diversity of Jewish religious and cultural practices. Representation matters!

Sometimes tough to hear

This story makes me feel seen. And hopeful. Some of this is tough to get through. Avital’s pain is unrelenting. But the joy woven throughout the whole story makes it all worth it. Dara Rosenberg does a beautiful job with Jean Meltzer’s heart-wrenching, heartwarming tale.

Beautifully written!

I got so mesmerized by the characters and the story that I was sad when it ended. I wanted more!

A bit raunchy but fun

I liked the Jewish holidays and cultural aspects and perspectives were great. The story lacked a little depth. But brought a lot of awareness of woman’s health and living with chronic pain
