About this listen

A Love in Laguna Novel

Jim Carney has a full time job - running from himself. Since he walked out on his wealthy family at 16 because he'd wrecked his best friend's life over some yaoi graphic novels, Jim has lived a macho, blue-collar existence of too much booze and too little responsibility. Then Billy Ballew, the man Jim most admires, gives Jim a chance to come through as his construction supervisor. For once, Jim is determined to make someone proud. Then Jim goes in for a physical for his new job, and his yaoi dream comes to life in the form of cardiologist Ken Tanaka. Jim discovers he has two heart problems - a wonky mitral valve and a serious attraction to his doctor. But Ken is a major player, and Jim might be just a notch on the doc's stethoscope. To Ken, Jim is unforgettable - but the living embodiment of his traditional family's worst nightmares. How come the minute Jim decides to be responsible, he finds himself taking care of his kid brother, getting a proposal from a wealthy woman, making a deal with the devil, and winding up in the hospital - when all he really wants is the knave of broken hearts?

A favorite reread.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I have read this book already. Great storytelling, the most wonderful characters and the kind of love story that is so engaging and captivating. Equally as important is the amazingly talented narrator, K.C. Kelly. He makes every book very special, bringing stories and characters to life. And unforgettable.

Good Story

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this BUT I just felt the ending was rushed and not really satisfied with the loose ends with Jims family but I was glad to know what became of his high school friend. I also became more frustrated with Jim through the middle to end of the book, I wanted to strangle him myself! I do want to read Billy's story and can't wait. With the narration I LOVED the narrators voice for Ken Tanaka, so sexy!!!

Better than the last book!

I just loved it. My heart hurt when it ended. I must say that the slow burn for these two lovers was a little to slow. This was a book about feelings and learning how to fight for what you want out of life. Both characters grew a lot. Both played the field and didn't want to settle down until they met each other. There wasn't a lot of sex but you don't notice it because the dialogue is just that good. Can't wait for the next one.

The main relationship didn't feel realistic to me

Ken and Jim's interactions were mostly by chance, hardly included any real conversations, and yet still progressed to "I love you" immediately after Jim is freed from his obligations. I did not see that kind of progression between them. Jim came to his rescue twice and they flirted a little and did some physical things but it didn't feel like they knew each other that well by the end. Maybe I zoned out during the whole book, lol

One thing I really love about these books so far is that the female characters haven't been villains. They've been real people, plenty of them lovable, and some of them even steal my sympathy from the main characters. These sweet, strong girls being dangled around gay guys by their overbearing parents don't deserve that, yet I love that they don't throw fits or anything cliche. Good characters all around in these books.

Nice read! Fantastic narration! Good story.

Loved the story and the difference in culture the main characters battled with throughout the book.
Appreciated the different ways women were described, quite refreshing to read in a M/M romance.

Not together

I am 21 chapters into the book and the main characters are still not together. I am not liking this story. The situation(s) that Jim suffers thru border on the absurd, Ken's situation is more believable, but it's hard to understand his decisions. How Jim & Ken are supposed to have a relationship let alone a HEA is wearing on me. Still slogging thru the story but know I will not listen to this one again.
KC Kelly is a good narrator, and the only reason I am still listening
