Publisher's summary

When Constance Reid's new husband, Sir Clifford Chatterley, returns from war paralyzed and in a wheelchair, she sees her future wither. As their marriage grows loveless, she mourns the desires fated to go unfulfilled. But a stirring fascination with Oliver Mellors, the estate's coarse, taciturn gamekeeper, blooms into feelings she feared had died. Soon the lovers find themselves entangled in scandal, and their taboo affair becomes as pernicious as it is passionate.

Condemned when first published for its frank language and bold eroticism, this controversial landmark novel stands today as a trailblazing contribution to the literary canon.

AmazonClassics brings you timeless works from the masters of storytelling. Ideal for anyone who wants to listen to a great work for the first time or rediscover an old favorite, these new editions open the door to literature's most unforgettable characters and beloved worlds.

The reader

It’s a beautiful book but the reader was a little harsh and abruptly with her reading. The flow was not continually and threw me off. She wasn’t a good fit for a wonderful classic as this book.

Better Than I expected

Touted as a "classic" my entire life, I supposed at some point I'd get around to reading it. Shocking for its time. Considered mild now. Discovered I like DH Lawrence better than F Scott Fitzgerald.

Amazing Novel, Well Read

I am a fan of Heather Wilds which is why I chose this edition. Although I can understand why some didn't care for her reading, I felt her style was perfectly suited the tone of the novel. I love her voice and I appreciate the way she can do believable male voices without changing to a weird deep voice the way some women readers do.

Previously my only exposure to the book was back in high school, while it was still banned. Someone had obtained a copy and was passing it around with the sexy parts marked. Too bad the book was mainly valued for those passages in those days (at least by teenagers) because Lawrence had a splendid style and his depiction of the attitudes of men and women toward sex is brilliant. We could have benefited from his understanding as we ventured into adult life.

Ahead of its time...

Alas, most of the world has not caught up with this novel. Much still left to think upon and pursue.

Terrible narrator

This narrator does not bring the story to life. I exchanged for another version. Next time I’ll check reviews first!

Couldn’t finish

This book is supposed to be a classic controversial book from the 70s. The story seems intriguing as the characters question boundaries and limitations of their marriage and what it means to be committed and happy.

The narrator, however, was horrible. She does not take breaths or pauses, and it seems as though the story is just one very long run on sentence. Where is the inflection on the characters and their voice and the concern and the disdain? With a different narrator, this would be a great book.

I am ROTF at the utter ridiculousness in this novel!

The voice reader was very good, although she does have sort of a hiccup style of delivering sentences. It was a little distracting. However, the book itelf eventually became all I noticed. I cannot believe this novel has become canon of a sort! As literature, it is the silliest melodrama I’ve ever read. As porn, I guess a case could be made for that in some circles. In any case, I couldn’t stop laughing once I reached the halfway point. I was expecting a love story, or else something insightful, literary. But instead, for me this book was pure inadvertant silliness, more like a middle-school girl’s diary of the dramas going on with her and her middle-school peers, all with literary pretensions. I laughed and laughed.
