About this listen

While Lady Violet Belmaine is busy sorting out the odd turns her life has recently taken, Hugh St. Sevier repairs to his Kent estate in hopes of embarking on the placid life of a rural physician. Alas, for St. Sevier, the village of St. Ivo has more secrets than it has pots of heartease, and the good doctor will once again find himself the target of rumors and threats.

Somebody is rigging St. Ivo’s hound races, setting neighbor against neighbor, and turning what should be a friendly entertainment into an occasion for brawling. As an expert on medicinal herbs and soporifics, St. Sevier comes under suspicion. St. Ivo badly needs a physician, and the village also needs somebody to unravel the intrigues that are tearing it apart. St. Sevier can’t get to the bottom of the mystery on his own, but help—in the persons of Lady Violet and Sebastian MacHeath—is on the way!

Not as Good as previous on series

I missed Lady Violet being the lead protagonist. The narrator kept changing Anne's Scottish accent so half the time she sounded very American.

A great cast of characters

Pleasantly surprised to find that this book was told mainly by Hue and Ann. At this point, they’re integral to Lady Violet’s world. It was great to get more details into Hue and Ann’s past.
Love the way Grace Burrowes has created such a wonderful bunch of characters. She’s given herself so much to work with, using Violet’s large family and now the villagers of St. Ivo. Hoping we will get more stories from these folks.
Kirsten potter does an amazing job of voicing Hue, Violet, Ann and Sebastian in all of their various accents. Bravo!!!

A GREAT BEGINNING OF THE END

Glad the author has elected to write separate stories after life-altering experiences change the direction of Hugh and Violet's futures. Hugh is obviously a major part of this series. To overlook the separation and its effect would seem careless. Love this narrator.. Very effective characterizations. Can't wait for final Book 8. Hope it will be audible soon.

Disappointed in story line

I was expecting another Lady Violet book so I was disappointed in the direction of this book. I’m hoping it’s Sabastian and Lady Violet in the next book (and their love story). Hugh sure got over Violet fast 🙄.

Ok, so I’m not the only one…

I was reading the reviews and I was happy to see I was not the only one to notice that Hugh got over Violet fast! I had to stop listening 🙉 I couldn’t stand it. How, right away he’s checking his wife out. (How her skin is perfect and crap like that) When he was wooing violet he would talk crap about his wife and how she was always trying to make him jealous and stuff like that. Now he is thinking in his head how he wants a quiet life and that he didn’t like how violet likes to salve puzzles! (Ugh…. ) I think I would have enjoyed this story more if I heard violet fall in love with the Scott who was her bff first! And even then SHE IS TAKING IT SLOW WITH HIM! When WE ALL KNOW HE WAS THE ONE FOR HER! and see how there love unfolds before listening about Hugh and Ann. I guess all the books were about Violet so I feel like Im more loyal to her. I can’t be loyal to Hugh until I see Violet is happy. …. But even still can we have at least heard the PAIN AND STRUGGLE in his mind. Of him at least missing Violet! I would have liked to see him SLOWLY fall back in love with his wife. …. Makes him look like a fickle cad who falles easily in and out of love And it kinda got me upset how he detached himself from the baby, looking at the baby more like it belongs to Violet! (“But he would always love the baby in he’s heart”. .. Ew what!) He dropped in esteem to me when he said that. Makes me feel like he NEVER really loved Violet and maybe he would have eventually cheated on her. (So, good riddance with him) He got over her too fast and he is like oh well, c’est la vie.

Don’t get me wrong! I do want him to make up with his wife and make the best of his situation. I don’t expect him to dwell on Violet forever, Not at all! But he made it seem like he was head over heals for Violet that he didn’t just want to be Violet’s lover he wanted to be her husband. He wanted her to be madly in love with him the way he was with her. Then his wife comes along and he was (dang, my wife is hotter then Violet ) Violet you can kick rocks… lol 😂 ok maybe not like that lol 😂 but dang! Makes it sound like he was settling for Violet. When she didn’t even want to marry him to begin with!! She just wanted a fling WHY not have just let it be a fling then HUH!! When you diside to get married you’re making a commitment. You can’t just turn that on and off just like that. I get it his wife was there first I TOTALY get that but he was away from his wife for a while. His wife In this case is like a stranger. He was in a way coerced to marry his wife because of her situation and circumstances. BUT he chose Violet he was patient in wooing her. He was invested like a real courtship. You would think he would be more devastated. With his wife SHE LEFT HIM! On top of the fact that he was coerced into the marriage SHE LEFT! For him to be just like bye Violet I know you are in good hands with the Scott makes it be like WHAT?!😱 I CANT WITH HIM!! I’m so over him! That fickle cad!! And to top it off Violet came and saved him from the noose! I’m just disappointed, I wished I would have seen more of an internal struggle that’s all 🥺😕

Hey brilliant Read with a twist

I enjoyed the fact that the lesser characters were the narrators of the story which was a twist on the previous books

Beautiful resolution

Grace weaves a long, realistically developed, poignant story to a beautiful believable resolution while throwing important insights into history, war, the resilience of the human spirit and love in all its complexity and simplicity in an array of deeply significant relationships.

not what I wanted

If you're going to write a Hugh St Sevier book that do so as a Hugh St Sevier book. It could be a single book or a new series. I want to read about Violet and Sebastion. I don't mind Hugh and Ann but as a seperate item.
