About this listen

A phony engagement turns into real passion in this delightful Regency romance from award-winning author Anne Gracie.

Fate has lavished beauty on the Merridew sisters - that is, all save the eldest. But plain Prudence bears no grudge; she loves her four beautiful sisters infinitely. So when their abusive grandfather is laid up with an injury, she seizes the opportunity to concoct an ingenious plan that will allow all five of them to escape the clutches of their legal guardian. All it will take is a little matrimonial deception....

A renowned rake, Gideon, Lord Carradice, has a way of making ladies swoon. But when Prudence arrives at his doorstep and mistakes him for his cousin, the Duke, it is Gideon who's infatuated. The delightful spitfire claims she and the Duke are engaged - although a taller tale was never told. In spite of the lies, Gideon is so taken with charming Prudence that he's eager to join her game, especially if it will award him a stolen kiss or two. Now, Prudence's plot is about to go terribly, albeit deliciously, awry....

Contains mature themes.

Funny!

This is the first time I've read an Annie Gracie book and it was so humorous! I found myself laughing through much of it. it did have other serious themes such as child beating and as a result, girls being taken in by anyone who showed them kindness - and I didn't laugh through those parts, but the relationship between the eldest girl child, Prudence, and Gideon, a past "rake". Prudence is described as not very pretty, but Gideon thinks and also says to her that she's beautiful! How can you not like a story with that premise? I also hadn't heard of narrator, Heather Wilds, before and she was so great! She could do both men's and women's voices excellently! I always think the test of a great narrator is if one forgets the narrator and believes there is actually a man or a woman talking - and that is what Heather Wilds does! Love this book!

All the feelings are in this story

I read a review someone wrote that they turned the speed down. I turned it up a couple of notches and it was perfect. The narrator’s voice was great just seemed slow.
The story line moved along very well.
I felt the poetry at the beginning of each chapter got longer and longer and that I could do without.
The author included some angst toward the end but explained rather well and finished the story without a cliffhanger.

worth listening til the end

Story starts with a bang and then gets somewhat bogged down. The last half is an exciting romp.

The Perfect Rake

I really enjoyed this book. Note there are themes of physical abuse by a guardian. Prudence takes her sisters and runs to her great uncles house to get away from her abusive Grandfather. She comes up with a white lie to get out of having a season because she has been secretly betrothed to another man for 4 1/2 years. When her great uncle demands who she is betrothed to, she tells him the name of a duke that is never seen in town so that she doesn’t have to tell who she is really betrothed to. The only problem is the Duke is in town and she must warn him. When she visits the Duke before her uncle can demand he marry her, she meets an infamous take pretending to be the Duke. I laughed out loud through most of the book. I will admit I wanted to knock Prudence over the head a few times for being so ignorant, but overall I enjoyed the book.
