About this listen

Three women, united by love and kinship, struggle to conform to the social norms of the times in which they live.

In 1931 Katherine Henderson leaves behind her small town in Kansas and the marriage proposal of a local boy to live on her own and work at the Sears & Roebuck glove counter in Chicago. There she meets Annie - a bold, outspoken feminist who challenges Katherine's idea of who she thinks she is and what she thinks she wants in life.

In 1997 Katherine's daughter, Joan, travels to Lawrence, Kansas, to clean out her estranged mother's house. Hidden away in an old suitcase, she finds a wooden box containing trinkets and a packet of sealed letters to a person identified only by a first initial.

Joan reads the unsent letters and discovers a woman completely different from the aloof and unyielding mother of her youth - a woman who had loved deeply and lost that love to circumstances beyond her control. Now she just has to find the strength to use the healing power of empathy and forgiveness to live the life she's always wanted to live.

This book is amazing. You will be doing yourself a strong disservice if you don't read/listen to Letters Never Sent by Sandra Moran. It's about love, finding one's self, and tragedy. Katherine, the main character, is expertly written and you feel for her at every word. Joan, Katherine's daughter and the other main character, is also expertly written. If you love great fiction, historical fiction, and/or lesbian fiction, then I highly recommend you buy this book.

I had read the book and loved it. I thought the audio was wonderful too. I found myself looking for excuse to take a drive or do yard work. Anything to slip on my ear buds and get back to the story.

This story really crept up on me and then wham! My only criticism was that I found the authors attention to detail about mundane things a little tedious at times. As the the story developed and progressed though, Moran found her focus and was ultimately able to deliver a flowing, epic tale that reached a very moving finale. Kates internal battles with her sexuality, because of family pressures to conform to heteronormativity, and her lack of self worth were frustrating to a degree but completely relatable and understandable, given the religious oppression and misogyny people endured. (And still do.) Her character traits blended beautifully with Annie’s tenacity and self confidence, and they balanced each other out perfectly. No explicit scenes for those who like spice, but the author delivered a handful of very romantic moments leading up to the physical act of lovemaking. This was a story of romantic, enduring true love against the hardships of life and religious oppression perennially rife with homophobia and misogyny, mostly set in pre and post WWII midwest America. Highly recommended

Slow start, gained momentum, epic finale.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story of love and friendship. The mystery behind Catherine and Annie's love affair was especially exciting! I would love to read a "prequel" about Annie.

Beautifully written story of love and friendship.
