About this listen

It is August of 1704, and Matthew Corbett and his companions have narrowly escaped the island of Golgotha and are recuperating in the town of Alghero on the northwestern coast of Sardinia, currently under Spanish rule. Hudson Greathouse is at his limits, both mentally and physically, after their harrowing ordeal.

Their respite is short-lived when the Spanish authorities learn of their abandoned quest for Brazio Valeriani and the mirror created by his father, Ciro. This mirror is rumored to have the power to summon demons from the underworld, and the Spanish authorities are eager to possess it. Consequently, a professional witch-hunter and soldiers are assigned to accompany Matthew, Hudson, Professor Fell, and Cardinal Black as they resume their quest.

Their only lead on Brazio's whereabouts takes them to Venice. Unbeknownst to them, members of an established crime family also seek the mirror for their own nefarious purposes, and a betrayal from within Matthew's cohorts puts the family on their trail. The journey presents numerous challenges, including a close encounter with the French-Dutch war, forcing Hudson to confront personal demons from his past and putting the entire group in grave danger.

As they race toward the mirror with multiple competing agendas for its future, Matthew finds help and support from unexpected places. The quest will push him to his limit once again, cause him to question his own beliefs about what is real and what is fantasy, and ultimately what his future holds.

Leviathan is the final installment in best-selling author Robert McCammon's acclaimed series of historical thrillers featuring Matthew Corbett, a brave and resourceful "problem-solver." Matthew aims to solve the mystery of the mirror once and for all and end his entanglement with Professor Fell, so he can return to New York to start his life with Berry Grigsby. However, this ultimate test of his wits, cunning, and ingenuity might prove to be more than even Matthew Corbett can handle.

The Matthew Corbett Series has been one of my favorites for years now. I feel that this group of works has been McCammon best. I also think this is Ballerini's best work as well.

I totally recommend all of the novels, and (spoiler alert) - if this is last one of the 1700's setting of the series I will miss it, but interested to see where it goes based on the ending. Most times, all good things must come to an end.

SO GREAT!!!

McCammon delivers in this satisfying ending to a wonderful series. I was pleased with the way he wrapped things up for both Matthew & Hudson Greathouse. I was also pleasantly surprised with the unexpected twists associated with Professor Fell’s character. It’s a shame this series is over and I’m eagerly anticipating McCammon’s next project.

A worthy ending to a great series

I have loved following the adventures of colonial American problem-solver Matthew Corbett since "Speaks the Nightbird." Robert McCammon already has some seriously great books like a "Boys Life" and "Swan Song" along with "They Thirst" that made me an avid reader in the '80's. But his blend of legitimate period knowledge wrapped in a world of super-criminals with the right amount of fun gore, makes the Matthew Corbett series playing for days.

Edoardo Ballerini brings the cast to life with the right amount of voice action and humor. Corbett, Greathouse and Fell feel close complete characters with his voice. In this book, McCammon hints at a happy ending for Corbett and his fiancee B. Grigsby, though might there be one more book with a new character named Holmes working with Minx Cutter in the London Harrold Agency? The epilogue hints at more from Matthew Corbett.... in the future.

Enjoy. I can only hope it makes it to Netflix one day. Think "The Wild Wild West" but set in Colonial times. It could be fun.

Matthew Corbett Just Makes Historical Fiction Fun

If you’ve been following, or read a few of the Matthew Corbett books, this is an incredible ending to the series. Beyond perfect narration from Edoardo. This series was amazing!!

While the first Matthew Corbett novel, Speaks the Nightbird, has always been my favorite in the series, they're all very good. The last, Leviathan, is one of the better entries. Like others, I'm sad the series ends here, but it ends on a high and satisfying note. I'll be revisiting Matthew, Fell, Hudson and the rest in the future. Ballerini narrates superbly as always.

Exciting conclusion to a great series

I loved every one of the Matthew Corbett adventures. Leviathan was a no disappointment after awaiting its release. And yes, of course I did not want it to end.
I especially appreciated the ode to reincarnation that bubbled up throughout. Who hasn't had that feeling of knowing someone or a place as they traverse the earth?

Most excellent end to a fabulous series
