About this listen

A daughter pushing the limits. A marriage ready to crack. A secret that can break them.

For Emily Rossi, life may not be perfect, but it's pretty close. She has a great career, a house in the country, a solid marriage to Eric and two wonderful children - tennis superstar Daniel and quiet, sensitive Zara. But when her fourteen-year-old daughter brings home a toxic new best friend, Emily’s seemingly perfect family starts to spiral out of control.

Suddenly Zara is staying out late, taking drugs and keeping bad company. And just when Emily needs Eric to be an involved father, he seems too wrapped up with his job in London to care. What’s more, he's started drinking again.

When a dark secret from the past emerges, Emily's life is turned upside down. Struggling to protect the people she loves, can she save her damaged family? Doing so may mean keeping a secret of her own....

Difficult to stick it out

This was a story about addiction. It had a slow pace and jumped around in time quite a bit. Some very poignant moments and believable emotion and a satisfying ending. Just struggled to finish.

Really good storyline

I could see this happening in real life, but with a few exceptions. The ending caught me off guard. I listened to the ending a second time, I could understand the emotions she went through. I could have done that too (maybe).

An emotionally entangling story well told.

I found myself tearing up at the final scenes. I had truly grown to know and love or hate the characters and found the end piece so moving.

More Real than Fiction

I think the narrative was intriguing, I actually grew to like Emily. I was irritated by the ending though. I was hoping there would be a twist. I actually think things came together to seamlessly in the end without adding more complexities to the characters.

The narrator, Esther Wane, is top-notch. Her voice is mesmerizing & well modulated, captivating.

The story was good enough. Characters were well developed, writing was strong. The plot was a bit confusing in places, with choppy scene breaks. Writing and narration were good enough to hold my interest and made up for any plot weaknesses. I liked the characters.

No shockers

Nothing shocking. I knew the story and what was happening quite early on. Kept waiting for something to shock or surprise me but it never happened.

Depressing

While much of the drama in this story is much more realistic than your average suspense novel, the story is boring. There are only glimmers of redemption. Shitty stuff happens, it doesn't really get better, the end.
