What No One Tells You About India

"Now that I’m immersed in no electricity, no wifi, and no cheese either, I have a different perspective. I cannot dash out and get a rich cup of brewed coffee right now. If I want that I have to walk far into the sunshine on a winding path through rice fields with buffalo plowing the earth. I don’t want it that badly. When I’m in the USA, I’m reminded that results are what count. There is no process. We have to be successful right now. But try telling that to butterfly pupas on their way to being butterflies. They will break out and fly. We forget that. Before I got my first publishing contract for my book Everyday Naked, I wrote for five years and didn’t tell anyone about it. I just wrote. When I wanted to show my writing to someone other than my dog, I put together a book proposal and went to a writers retreat where I met my publisher. Interesting how a few people reacted when I told them about the book being published. Most people were happy, but I also heard, “Did you know someone?” or “I didn’t know you wrote”, which means I didn’t know, so how could you be an author all of a sudden. Because it wasn’t all of a sudden. No one saw me in my room writing every day, being in my pupa stage. When it was time to bust out, I flew out of my cocoon. But I was in there for five years, writing every day. And when I came out of the room, I’d be making a living, raising a son, and being married. Now after a bazillion years of meditating, (okay, it’s been 25 years) I still am learning how to do it."

We have here this great travel book...100% Mary!

I've got big travel dreams, but I'm the worry filled -I could lose my passport!-, get to the airport 5 hours ahead of my departure time -kind of guy.. Sounds familiar? What can we cautious types do to get inspiration to go to the lands where we truly want to go?
Well, on a moonless night, we could hit that searchlight switch and send out the Bartnikowski signal!
Or, easier, lets all listen again and again to any or all of Bartnikowski's enchanting travel stories!
She has been everywhere; to every tiger filled jungle, slept on every stone floor mattress in every monastery on the roofs of our world. Done serious tropical beach time.
Shes got the courage of a water buffalo, took me a while to realize that.
Shes truly spiritual in the most practical way. Also a really outstanding photographer; and her generosity in sharing her trade secrets is alone worth buying this book.
The tales in this book are highly descriptive, hella inspiring, humorously rueful, and on occasion sarcastic. (She isn't people shy.)
I wasn't sure if she could do audio justice to her written word. She sure can. Her Mary spirit is in every spoken story, and her command of tone and emotions is quite alive and professional. Much better than many other authors, such as, oh, say, Stephen King.
Listen to these tales and c'mon, lets be Mary!

What a fun read!

I so enjoyed listening to this story on Audible.com. The narrator/author was a hoot - her voice was perfect for this story. Being a "World Traveler" myself - my husband and I traveled to 50 countries in 5 years - I could so relate to her experiences, and the ups and downs, which she expressed in both story and voice. Mary's story was told simply - and elegantly at the same time. Her respect for the places she visited and people she met was uplifting. It tells a lot about the kind of person she is.
My husband and I had the pleasure of taking a photograph class with the author, who we didn't know, on a trip to San Francisco. If you ever get the chance, do that. It was a blast and she made it so easy and fun to take better photos. Reading/listening to this book is almost like meeting her - a real joy.

Thou shalt not live a boring life

How can you not like this book? I love the way this author manages to deliver so much wisdom without preaching in her books. A highly entertaining and inspiring writer. I loved Mary's first book, "Everyday Naked" and so had no hesitation in choosing to get the audio book of "Living Dangerously." As women, we instinctively know how to take care of ourselves in a dangerous world. Though we may have adopted a facade of placating and pleasing others, inside we know we are capable of much more, and yet we hesitate. Mary has taken the leap and shows us how we can stop pretending to be someone we aren't. What might look reckless to some, is simply the author being brave enough to live fully in the moment. That is the spiritual message of this deceptively light and funny book. She models for us that we can break free of ruts and other people's opinions. I love it! A single woman with very modest means, living the nomadic life with brio and generosity, daring to be herself and trusting in her lucky stars. However, I'm sure the author did cause her guardian angels a bit of a panic with that oven episode.
