About this listen

A young man who has improbably escaped death twice reveals his secret in a spine-tingling short story by New York Times bestselling author Joe Hill.

Martin Lorensen is a twenty-three-year-old counselor for disturbed teenagers. He’s bright, compassionate, attractive, and outgoing. He’s also—and this is the most interesting thing—not dead. Martin has improbably survived not one but two deadly disasters that claimed dozens of lives. The kid is riding one hell of a lucky streak. Two federal agents think there is something darker at play. Now that they’ve arranged to interview Martin, they want answers. Martin is ready to share everything he knows. One thing is for certain: when it comes to escaping death, luck doesn’t figure into it at all.

Short and very sweet

This was the right length for a short drive. It holds your attention, and keeps it the whole way as the story unfolded. It started to be a bit predictable by the end, but that’s how it was supposed to be. It a worthy, easy read that is interesting and suspenseful the whole time.

Love Short Story Format!

Lovely story! Would love to see a fully fleshed out story of Martin. The voice actor did a great job and brought all the characters to life. ❤️

Wow!

This was a very pleasant, very surprising, short delight. It captivated me in less than 20 and by the end I was stunned.

Wonderfully Chilling Short

Another wonderfully chilling short from Joe Hill. While I got this last month for my First Reads selection, I waited until the audiobook came out. It was worth it. Leon Nixon did a fantastic job narrating and really brought the story home. Even though you knew the ending was coming, it was still well done and I loved the Hall and Oates jokes as well. Would've been a great novel.

Standing Ovation!!!

Short stories like this makes me feel like things could exist even though I'm an atheist. Haunting, mysterious and twisting. 29 pages PACKED with so much that it doesn't FEEL short.

Hope to hear more about Martin in the future

Joe Hill’s “Ushers” is a clever, modern horror short story, blending eerie atmosphere with contemporary life in a way that makes it feel real and unsettling. The interview-style parts of the story kept me engaged, adding a documentary-like depth that brought out the characters’ personalities. I especially appreciated details like Martin being a 23-year-old with a Twitch channel—it made him feel authentic, like someone you could know. Hill’s playful nod to Hall and Oats with Duvall and Oats was a fun touch, lightening the mood just enough without losing the horror vibe. Martin’s descriptions of the Ushers were vivid and well-drawn, giving the family a haunted, layered presence. I’d love to see Martin come back in future stories—he’s a character with a lot more to explore!
