About this listen

A collection of four chilling novels, ingeniously wrought gems of terror from the brilliantly imaginative number one New York Times best-selling author of The Fireman, Joe Hill.

"One of America's finest horror writers" (Time magazine), Joe Hill has been hailed among legendary talents such as Peter Straub, Neil Gaiman, and Jonathan Lethem. In Strange Weather, this "compelling chronicler of human nature's continual war between good and evil" (Providence Journal-Bulletin), who "pushes genre conventions to new extremes" (New York Times Book Review), deftly expose the darkness that lies just beneath the surface of everyday life.

Snapshot, performed by Wil Wheaton, is the disturbing story of a Silicon Valley adolescent who finds himself threatened by The Phoenician, a tattooed thug who possesses a Polaroid Instant Camera that erases memories snap by snap.

A young man takes to the skies to experience his first parachute jump...and winds up a castaway on an impossibly solid cloud, a Prospero's island of roiling vapor that seems animated by a mind of its own in Aloft, performed by Dennis Boutsikaris.

On a seemingly ordinary day in Boulder, Colorado, the clouds open up in a downpour of nails - splinters of bright crystal that shred the skin of anyone not safely under cover. Rain, performed by Kate Mulgrew, explores this escalating apocalyptic event as the deluge of nails spreads out across the country and around the world.

In Loaded, performed by Stephen Lang, a mall security guard in a coastal Florida town courageously stops a mass shooting and becomes a hero to the modern gun rights movement. But under the glare of the spotlights, his story begins to unravel, taking his sanity with it. When an out-of-control summer blaze approaches the town, he will reach for the gun again and embark on one last day of reckoning.

With an afterword from Joe Hill, read by the author.

Masterfully exploring classic literary themes through the prism of the supernatural, Strange Weather is a stellar collection from an artist who is "quite simply the best horror writer of our generation" (Michael Kortya).

Joe Hill-some writer!

And Mr Hill also has the benefit of 4 excellent narrators to bring life into his novellas.

A good listen-and a good collection of short novellas-quite enjoyable.

I had a hard time deciding which narrator did the best job! Kate Mulgrew is superb, Will Wheaton is always great, Dennis Boutsikaris is one of my favorites!

Like a box of yummy candy.

Best Joe Hill Yet

I think Joe's strongest writing is at the short story/novella length. I think, like his father, he will eventually raise his novel game to this level...I will be here for the ride. (I like how Yamada keeps showing up in his writing!)

Damn Fine Stories

I'd never read a Joe Hill story before these, kind of not putting much by his work because he's Stephen King's son. But that turned out to be wholly unfair. Really excellent style all his own, and lovely characterization. I enjoyed the relevance of these stories, and was spellbound until every ending.

Mixed bag but good

Really liked the first story about the Polaroid man. Spooky. Didn't much get into the 2nd story about the shooting. Too close to real life. The last 2 stories were entertaining. I love Kate Mulgrew reading.

Great performance- 2 very good novels and 2 meh 1s

Wil Wheton's performance in snapshot is excellent. I enjoy his readings in general, I had just finished Ready Player One and his performances were actually different enough that I didn't really confuse the two for long. The story itself was also really great and I enjoyed it.

Loaded was probably the best story on here and it was extremely tense and visceral. The story stuck with me long after it finished. The Performance was also top notch and I could clearly identify all the characters with the inflections and voice changes the actor did. Very well done.

The Cloud story was okay I did like the story itself and the performance but it was not as memorable as the others.

Strange Weather- I actually never finished this one. The story was off for me, not sure if it was the actor of the story itself but it didn't grab me. I think I have about 2.5 hours left of that one.
